Anyone here play this? I just bought the special edition a couple days ago and I'm really enjoying it so far.

are Quake substitutes like UT really still necessary, now that we have Quake 4 ? I mean, I keep the first Unreal and Unreal Tournament 99 for the nostalgia and such, but the newer ones surely do nothing for me. gaming in general has lost nearly all the flair it had in the nineties, and the only way to stay real as a gamer is to stick with iD software games. still

How exactly can UT2004 be a substitute for Quake 4 when UT2004 came out first? And what's with this narrow-minded b.s. philosophy that you can only have one game and one game alone? Why not dare to venture into other games, learn to enjoy more of what exists and not just focus solely on one thing? Seems a bit ridiculous to me and, quite honestly, stupid--sorry. Same thing with people who only listen to heavy metal, or only listen to Backstreet Boys type pop music. Do yourself a favor and expand your horizons a little. There's more to life than just idol-worship of iD software. I like the original Doom from 1993 as much as the next guy, but gimme a break, it isn't the only good game out there. Not to be particularly rude, but I do find the empty headed idol-worship of iD kinda funny... seeing as Quake 4 isn't by iD, but by Raven Software. Slight contradiction there. Better delete Q4 off your harddrive now (if you even own it) and go back to Doom '95, Quake 1, or Wolfenstein 3D. Because, you know, you want to stay " real" as a gamer. Assuming, of course, that "real" means "stagnating."

You surely misunderstand me in many a point, maybe intentional ? Doom 1/Doom 2 is the best SP of all time, and I play it because I like it best. One zillion addons and levels and sourceports make sure it never gets boring. Wolfenstein 3D is not more real just because it is slightly older. If this would apply, I would rather play Hovertank 3D and Catacomb 3D. My other favorite game is Quake 2 for multiplayer, though I sometimes also played SP missions for it and enjoyed them. A game must feel and look like this to gain my permanent interest, and that's the problem with the later games .... shallowness. They are lacking this certain edge. The first Unreal came out when Quake 2 ruled the place, so it had to copy the gameplay and the atmosphere to get its audience. And - this one time they partially succeeded with it, because of that I still sometimes fire up this game and play it. Umm, Quake 3 .... I play it from time to time but don't feel at home in it. Wrong atmospere/graphics/physics. All in all it is clearly visible that Q3 is one big sellout shit they made for business. I played some Quake 3 based games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Soldier of Fortune 2 or Heavy Metal FAKK 2 until I realized .... well, that I don't like them. Quake 3 was really marking the general sellout of the gaming industry. It was not Rock'n Roll no more like in the nineties. Raven Software were always a worthy sidekick of iD and made some respectable stuff with recent iD engines, with Heretic 2 being my favorite. The perfect fantasy trip based on the Q2 engine. Raven were surely the best ones who could have made Q4. Yes, I own the game and I got an additional computer on my desk which can barely run it. Still saving for the real high end mill of my dreams .... I'm not restricting myself in any way, I surely look into stuff which is promising a bit of fun. Like running Duke Nukem - Land of the Babes with a PS emulator and stuff. Installed Daikatana currently .... some people say it's a crap game, but let's see if this is true. And I'm collecting all Q2 based games anyway. Think I have them all by now, except SIN. ;D SO how can UT 2004 be a substitute for Q4 when it came out earlier ? That's the point, it was substituting Q4 while it was not done. DUH.

I can't stand such abrasively arrogant people like you. Believe it or not, you aren't always right about every single thing you speak about. Sure, you seem like a smart enough guy from time to time, but I think you could really benefit from just stepping back from yourself occasionally and thinking, 'Do I really need to act like such a dick in order to satisfy my ever-expanding ego by talking down to people as if they're retarded monkies, far beneath me?' Just take the time to sit back and realize, 'hey, my opinion isn't the holy law of the universe after all.' Honestly, I think you'd come off as a much friendlier person this way.
Instead of the constant nitpicking and the whole attitude that it's your way and only yours that counts.
I mean think about it, your immediate instinct was to bash me because I happen to enjoy a computer game that you don't. Is that really all it takes? Sad.

anyone seen the previews for UT3?!? ( titled UT2007 till recently...) It looks like a pretty damn worthy game. Not as insane as Quake Wars is gonna be, but it's aimed at a slightly different niche. Graphics wise, it's nearly as beautiful. some previews available here: www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=119733

Hard to believe we went from a thousand million of acres of grass, dirt and water to get to where we are today... These games will be NOTHING in a few years. When ever I have kids, they won't believe that we had games that _ONLY_ looked like the screenshot above..
