Quote:Posts: 2 Join Date: Feb '10 Running Quake II under Windows 7 2/11 12:18pm I'm new to this board. I have an original version of Quake II that ran fine on my old XP computer, but when going to Window 7 and trying to install it from the CD, it keeps stopping with a fatal error "Could Not Load q2btns.dll" Can anyone out there give me any suggestions on a way around this, or will it just not run under Windows 7? The disk case says it will run under 95, 98, ME, Xp and 2000, but not Win 7, as the disk is several years old. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance -------------------------------- Running Quake II under Windows 7 2/11 1:13pm Manually install it - the installer doesn't really do much, it just copies the files and creates a shortcut. All of the game files are in the "data" folder in the cd, so just copy those to C:\quake2\ or whatever, and run quake2.exe --------------------------------- Posts: 2 Join Date: Feb '10 Running Quake II under Windows 7 2/11 3:55pm Thanks that made it work just fine. Now I'm going to try to get it to run under puppy linux. I don't suppose anyone can help me out there can they. I've use the WINE app and got a couple of windows programs to run. So if there is anyone out there who has done this, I sure would appreciate any help that you can give. -------------------------- Running Quake II under Windows 7 2/12 1:01am np, glad you got it working. There are native linux binaries (and source) for Quake 2, so you don't need to run it through wine. You should be able to find a whole load of updated quake2 clients that work better on modern linux installs than the old binaries from id. To install, you just copy the same files you've copied to install your Windows install, and add the linux binaries. IIRC there might be a /etc/quake2.conf to configure a few settings, but that may be redundant in modern clients (I've not touched q2 under linux for 10+ years). Don't forget to update your install to the latest version (for both Windows and Linux) if you plan to play online. Quote end.-W1

Quote:Quake 2 Win7 Quake 2 isnt running in windows 7(I just upgraded a week ago). It just crashes with a white screen. Sad panda I'm gonna give the Quake II .NET port a go and see if that helps www.vertigosoftware.com/Quake2.htmEDIT:Nope still not working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EDIT2: Okay without the .net port (its ♥♥♥♥) it works under software mode I had to go into the cfg files though to modify it: Steam\SteamApps\common\quake 2\baseq2\config.cfg and modify the line: set gl_driver "opengl" to set gl_driver "software" EDIT3: http://www.widescreengamingforum.com.../Id_Super_Pack That link solves all ur Win7 Issues. Last edited by Zwan : 11-24-2009 at 07:58 PM. ----------------------------------- Interesting post on the widescreen issue. I tried KMQuake yesterday, but all the blood and explosions looked like red, white, and yellow squares. I changed every possible setting but gave up on it (a shame, it made Q2 nice and shiny). I have been using Quake II Evolved. It works well enough and has improved sound, but I notice that no matter where you save it always puts you back at the start of whatever level you were on with only the blaster pistol. Any other weapons you picked up were gone. --------------------------------- widescreen? no i posted on win7 failing at Q2 binaries. It sounds like u have issues with ur GPU if ur getting artifacts like that. My old overclocked ATI 9800XT would have lots of white and red dots with doom3 cos it overheated and was rubbish. --------------------------------- Sorry, I meant "interesting posts on the widescreen forum site". I actually changed to EGL and it works great. Never had a problem with Doom 3 of any kind. ------------------------------ It was a pritty cruddy game IMO when it first came out. Great graphics for the time but not much else. The main issue was that it was a engine made for nvidia and they ignored optimisation for any other cards (I really hate when they do that). The original is much better even though playing nightmare is bloody annoying finding enough AMMO! Last edited by Zwan : 11-26-2009 at 06:45 PM. ------------------------------- That's just how particles in Quake I/II work. There are cvars however that can make hem look better, but I don't know them off the top of my head. MG_Man is offline Reply With Quote ---------------------------- I downloaded the Hi-Res textures -- problem solved and it all looks way cooler on top of it. ------------------------------- Just fired up or I should say tried to fire up Quake 2 last night and it no longer is running on Win7 for me any more. It's been at least a month or more since I last played it on the same rig and same drivers so something has changed since then. EDIT: Just brought it up on my Vista32 partition and it's running. I had to mess with the video options a bit but I got it to run under 3DFX openGl. It's simply not running on Win7 634 anymore though. I installed my retail copy thinking my Steam version was messed up and the best I could get was a little 3 x 3 window where it ran perfect. The moment you tried to move it to full screen it crashed to a white screen with Quake2.exe has stopped working. I had to use the Tasks Manager to close out the game. It was crashed and locked up. Last edited by MADDOGGE : 12-22-2009 at 06:24 PM. ------------------------------ I had a problem getting RTCW to run in the id super pack, and someone suggested installing nhancer and finding the game profile and going to compatibility --> opengl --> extension limit --> set to 4844. I tried it with Q2 because I was having the same problem (crash on launch) and it worked! I had to manually add the profile and executable in nhancer though, it didn't find it automatically. No big deal though. Quote end.-W1

Quake works fine on Windows 7; I run 7 and have had no problems with any engine. The installer off the disk does not work as it uses very old installer stuff that most likely doesn't even exist or work properly in 7.
EGL is possibly the most advanced engine in terms of support, it works the best on Windows 7 and Vista.

Iam sure we all think its very nice that you got it to work for you, but again, this thread is for solving troubles about having Quake2 running with Windows 7, and not for those who had no troubles. Thats just waist of space and stealing time for the ones who are in need of help. Anyway Paril, if you have some good tricks or tips for solving the troubles people have, please post them here, thx. -W1

Well no, I'm not saying that, what I mean is Quake 2 has no physical problems with 7 since it doesn't use any features that were removed from Windows 7 in terms of either the stdlib or Win32 API; anyone having problems with it would either be related to the fact that they are using the Steam version (which will have problems with it regardless) or the Windows 7 Beta, which also had problem with some older games in Software mode.
If anyone DOES have problems I'd love to help them out since I do have Windows 7, but I have a feeling it'd be related to something config-wise and not an actual compatibility issue..

Oh, actually the only thing I can think of would be the installer for Q2; THAT will have problems due to missing files. I believe that that installer is using an ancient version of InstallShield that Windows Vista most likely stopped supporting when it was released, but this is an easy workaround; copy the "data" folder in the disk to c drive, rename to quake2, done!
