Been testing my latest map I'm working on for Quake 2, using KM Quake 2. The map is going well, but the engine - on my machine - isn't being as reliable as I want it to be.
I change any setting using the video options menus (both normal and advanced options) and as soon as I exit the menu, or trying to bring the menu up after I've changed the settings it freezes on me and kicks me out to the desktop, and doesn't save any settings at all.
The same goes for Vanilla Quake 2 except it doesn't kick me out, but it doesn't freeze either, it just wont save settings changes.
I've got auto-downloading turned off in KM Quake 2 but it's not have any effect on reliability. I hate it how I can't just have a reliable engine to play test my map in.
has anyone else had this problem? I really want to finish this map.

Have you tried changing settings before loading any map, quitting, and then restarting? That will save your changes. If that doesn't work, you can try changing settings from the console (some settings require a manual vid_restart).
As far as vanilla Quake2 is concerned, with the v3.23 patch it doesn't save any settings in the video menu unless you tell it to (Apply Changes).

What a familiar story. That was the reason i release only one map and stopped in 2oo4 with mapping ... map too big?, too complex a silent memory error in XP, stuck/ freeze in win98/2ooo try it all.....talking about the Q2 EGL version... Could only do small projects before it crashed . I missed a lot of mapping those years pffff . Paril advize me too use aprq2_v1.211 for mapping... ( since then everything works 100% ).

I downloaded aprq2_v1.211 and ran the map with this engine. works no problems...it's pretty raw tho in terms of upgraded effects - next to none compared to KM Quake 2.
I'll use it for now, it (like KMQ2) is the most stable compared every other port. I don't know why KMQ2 is doing this though...it's always been a great port...I'm not sure if it's my video card drivers - which are the most recent version - or other factors...

tmg, could you send me the .bsp so that I can try to reproduce the crash and possibly fix it?
I have a hunch it might be the hunk system used in map loading.

Think there something wrong with your Q2 cfg file... or dll driver in Q2 map in conflict with your 3dcard.. unfortunately know nothing about dll filez, i am a Dos man hehe Win98Se.. LOL... We all know that windows can sometimes do very weird...suckzzzz.. You can try reinstall your video drivers & update directX.. 8 or 9 for Win Xp. Or Maybe option to lower down some graphics in windows so your program,s / Gamez have more free memory?..

I've got windows 7 Margaal - 64 bit. I sometimes feel that I need to reformat, reinstall my system, but with all the updates I've downloaded I dont want to.
I could get the service packs before I do because (hopefully) soon I wont have internet - I'm moving into my new house with my fiance' and we don't need internet as both our parents have it.
Also because I got a new motherboard recently so I think a clean install on my new system would be great...something to consider anyway...I don't know, I'm just want reliability.
I tried Quake 2 XP...it's crap. Too many special effects bleh!!!

ahh that explane everything...vista..
I am personally in favor of. latest hardware with a older operating system on it, for really power in gamez!. ( older gamez )...
I switched from Win98SE to XP ( dual core ) ..couple years now..
Best is linux i know....maybe install it when I'm older..hehe..
The only one who laughs is Bill Gates with his 6 million each year.

yeah I got XP 32 bit, but I don't know whether my new motherboard would be recognised...I'm also too used to Windows 7 interface. I do remember back when I had XP tho. MAN! everything ran so well and so realiably...Now I think they've over done it waaaaaaay too much in terms of graphics...I would like a simpler layout...might go the old school look for a while and make the theme look like Windows 98SE - yeah I loved that old skool OS too. so much better... Why can't life be that simple now...back then it seemed all that mattered to me was DOOM 2 and Warcraft....ahhhhhhhhhh

You could always try a dual-boot setup with both WinXP and Windows 7, just make sure you install XP first! XP x64 would be even better, as it will let you actually use all the RAM installed in your new motherboard. Regardless, with either XP you should make a slipstreamed install disc first that is up-to-date on all security patches.
You only need to give XP about 80 gigs for its partition, and 120 for Win 7, and make everything else an extended data partition (unless you already have a second hard drive dedicated for games, media, and projects).

Kightmare I did what you suggested in an earlier post - set up the game settings first, then save by quitting and then running my map. So far it has worked without error.
It is still doing the double load thing on me, but only when I load a map from a custom game directory. If I load a demo or map from the baseq2 directory it doesn't do it at all. It's like it loads my map once and reboots and does it again.
Like I said it does NOT do this when loading any of the stock SP or MP maps that are in vanilla quake 2.
*edit*
oh I've got XP 64 bit...I got the service pack 3 version and I would love to have a dual boot system so I can use my older games in XP and newer games/media apps in 7 - I'm trying to get all the service packs for 7...
One day I'll do it, but for now I'll just put up with it, but every once in a while it feels good to clean all the crap off the plate and do a fresh install.

I've only once ever experienced the double load thing you're describing, and thought it was a fluke. Does this happen under any custom game directory, or only specific ones? Have you tried a clean custom directory with only a single map? Maybe it's a file that's present or some setting in your config files.
BTW, XP x64 only went up to Service Pack 2, SP3 was for 32-bit XP.

I just encountered this again and managed to reproduce it. The double load only happens on occasion when starting a deathmatch game from loaded single player game. It's probably got something to do with the save state.

well I am using this parameter to load the game directory and map from the 'maps' directory when I run KMQuake2
c:\games\id\quake2\kmquake2 +game destruct +map bitswtdm11
it does a double load when I use this, every time I use it.
should I change anything to see if it makes a difference? maybe change +map to +devmap ?
I'll try backing up my destruct directory one day and placing only the textures folder and the single map I am testing to see if it's something else causing it...

Try +set deathmatch 1 +gamemap bitswtdm11.
