I something similar recently happened to me. It was the gl_driver cvar having a null value.
Add this to your command line:
+set gl_driver opengl32
You should still have "+set vid_ref gl" in there too.

After long thinking also decided tooo install win7 with classic Xp shell.
Kmq2 don't want to start any more... ( help... ).

GLimp_Init() - no hardware acceleration detected. Please install drivers provided by your video card/GPU vendor. You didn't install your GPU manufacturer's video drivers. This is a pretty common problem with fresh installs of Windows 7- just because it runs at native screen resolution with Aero working doesn't mean that it's ready for gaming.

This is a pretty common problem with fresh installs of Windows 7- just because it runs at native screen resolution with Aero working doesn't mean that it's ready for gaming. Knightmare i`m tooooo fast … a new Win7 setup for 5 min ....... no time for drivers install… always first a Quake2 test, will never learn it.... Thanks for quick response........everything works well again!.

that's the entire content of qconsole.log The game actually starts but it crashes immidietly If use your test build the same thing happens but the qconsole.log shows up empty I would like to point out, which I should probably have done before, that I'm not using a cd-version but a downloaded one So, hows Quake 2 running on Windows 7 for you?
