Hi all, I just wanted to ask if anyone knows a way to play Quake 3 maps in Quake 2. After all the engine modifications I thought there might be a way to do so without deompiling, recompiling and so on. Thx for any help or hints.

not completely sure, but I think the egl - sourceport can load Q3 maps.

If it is possible, it would have to be using a mod since the max draw distance in Q2 is 4096 units and many of Quake III's void maps are larger than this. Q2 also doesn't support meshes so all of the curved geometry would have to be rebuilt. Waaay back in the day, I worked on a project where we decompiled Q3A maps and after looking at them, rebuilt them using QERadiant. It was a lot of fun running around in Q3A maps using the Q2 engine...much larger scale and easily supported large numbers of players on just about every map.
**EDIT** The decompiling process for the Q3A maps would not lock the brushes to the grid which is why the levels had to be completely rebuilt from scratch. I've given the project some consideration lately...would be neat to go back to it.

EGL was once my favorite Engine.. ( very nice smoke effects ).. Arqlite2 is a simple Egl version.. =================================================But euhh?..oh YEssss, a interesting Engine is Gildor`s Engine ,it plays Q2,Q3 maps..... It needs pak0.pk3 from Quake3....copy to baseq2 and simple rename *.pk3 files ----> *.pak =================================================

The best part about the project I worked on was it worked with vanilla Q2. There's just something really cool about taking what is already there and doing things with the engine that no one would ever expect it to be able to do like the falling rain in Jester's "Buzzkill". An old Q2 mapper named Sven wrote an article called Obsolete Creativity in which he compared working within the confines of the Q2 engine to that of photography and how it didn't replace painting, but rather pushed painters to experiment with new ways of expression within the medium. I'll see if I can find that article and post it up.

Thx for all the input. Tried Gildors engine/mod. It needs some improvement but already works very good. Only some textures miss and some brushes are dran incorrect. But overall its a real good one. Hope he will finish it someday. :-)

I think everyone still mapping for Q2 would do themselves a great service in reading through some of his articles. Again, thanks for the assist!

n/p, man. I agree - every new mapper should have a look at these articles, also the reviews.

Boo!
Agreed with all of the above. Chris (Sven) was/is a very intelligent dude and a nice guy ta'boot. He was one of the nuts that drove 1/3 of the way down/across the US to join us in one of our Backshooter's Lan parties waaaaaaaay back in the day.
