If you feel you'd like to make changes to your map, please do so, and don't feel as if you're stuck with the original map you entered into this contest, because we actually prefer that you keep working on it till you succeed with a more polished version. The results of this contest should be used more as a guide to help you fix your map's problems, in order for you to learn how to become a better mapper. We're not here to judge you as a person, so don't take things personally. We also don't want to hold you back from developing your talent, and we certainly don't want to turn you away from mapping. We need you and your skills, so it's quite the opposite. Even if you don't win, don't take things too hard. This contest is more about learning and growing. Also know that our judges have to learn how to make better judgements as well, and in time I'm sure they will. There will be more contests and opportunities for them to prove that to you.
Ultimately we're here to help you grow. We know we can't make everyone happy, because not everyone can win. Take the contest results with a grain of salt, and just keep working away on your maps. It's important to perfect them, based on some kind of grounded feedback whether it's from players or judges, so you're not out of touch with reality. If you quit, or decide to make maps thinking they're perfect just the way they are, it's quite probable nobody will get to play them, so what would be the point of that? On the other hand if you learn something, and your maps win with the players, that's all that matters.
Also please don't get caught up in the initial map file names you started with, which are not all that important. What's important is that you produce a map version that you're proud of, and everyone wants to play. Note: keep in mind two map versions can't have the same file name otherwise they cause conflicts. So if you make changes to your map, also make sure to change the file-name each time as well.
There are many naming convenstions you can adopt ex:
q2dm1b q2dm1c... (alphabetical)
q2dm1_v1 q2dm1_v2... (version)
q2dm1_b1 q2dm1_b2... (beta)
If you look at jitspoe's map "highlandcastle_b3.bsp" it's already on _b3 (beta version 3). I know that having to change your map name isn't ideal, but it is the only thing that works on Quake 2. (After all we can't ask players to delete anything already downloaded). The most important thing here is to just keep the versions separate, and keep them evolving. As a server admin I've never had a problem with multiple versions of the same map as long as it was named differently. Also I'm sure any competent server admin will know only to keep the most recent version of your map in rotation, as long as the web isn't filled with links to various versions under the same filename. Different names are fine! For this very reason I wouldn't worry too much about trying to keep the original map file-name you started with.
