Not sure if this is the right section of the forum to post this issue?
Anyway, after several years, I decided to reinstall Quake2 plus some other MODS and maps.
Installed Quake2 and applied version 3.20 update. After starting Quake2 and making some setting adjustments, Quake2 runs fine (so far) under Windows 7 x64.
Next, I tried to install Kmquake2 map/mod as per the (sparse) installation instructions.
The main Kmquake2 executables (kmquake2.exe and kmquake2_netserver.exe) were copied to Quake2 main directory (which already has quake2.exe for running Quake2).
The Kmquake2 folder "lazarus" and its contents were copied to Quake2 main directory (so lazarus folder accompanies the existing Quake2 folders baseq2, docs, rogue, and xatrix).
Finally the Kmquake2 folder "baseq2" was merged with the existing Quake2 baseq2 folder.
Now on clicking kmquake2.exe to run Kmquake2, the program seems to start briefly with a black screen together with a very brief view of some small image in the middle. Then the program quits back to desktop.
Tried running compatibility troubleshooter and setting to Windows XP SP2, but that didn't make any difference, Kmquake2 still quits to desktop. But at some stage while fiddling with the compatibility settings, a small notice box appeared saying something about "Couldn't load pics/colormap.pcx".
Now within the Quake2 "baseq2" folder, the pak0.pak file within this folder definitely contains the directory/file "pics/colormap.pcx". So why isn't Kmquake2 detecting this file?
Is Kmquake2 not installed/copied to the correct directory?? I tried moving Kmquake2 executables (and its supporting folders) to different folders/directories (including creating separate folder for Kmquake2) as an experiment to see if that helped, but it didn't. Kmquake2 always quits back to desktop!
I vaguely recall having some difficulty running Kmquake2 years ago, but I managed to get Kmquake2 running in the end under Windows XP. Problem is I can't recall what was done to make Kmquake2 run!?
I also tried installing Kmquake2 on another computer running Windows XP, but again Kmquake2 quits back to desktop after starting!!
I tried version 0.16 and then later on I tried version 0.19 of Kmquake2, but neither runs properly.
So why is Kmquake2 not running (properly)? Why can't it find file "colormap.pcx"?
EDIT: It is now understood that Kmquake2 is just an "engine", it doesn't come with maps (at least not in the version I have), so it won't run without pointing to maps.
However, I installed a map called "Pax Imperia" by creating a folder named "pax" within the Quake2 directory and installing Pax Imperia files/folders to this folder. Then a desktop shortcut for Kmquake2 was created. This Kmquake2 shortcut properties was edited to include "+set game pax", according to map installation instructions. But after clicking the Kmquake2 shortcut icon to run the game "Pax", again there was a black screen with a brief view of a small icon in the middle, then the game exits back to desktop!
So something is still not working right. Why?
EDIT2: If of any help, this is the present directory/folder arrangement for installation of Quake2, Kmquake2, and Pax Imperia ("pax") as per respective installation instructions -
C:\Quake2\baseq2\
\players folder
\save folder
\video folder
config.cfg
game86.dll
kmq2game86.dll
kmquake2.pak
maps.lst
pak0.pak
pak1.pak
\docs folder
\lazarus folder
C:\Quake2\pax\
\levelshots folder
\sound folder
config.cfg
default.cfg
fmod.dll
game86.dll
kmq2config.cfg
kmq2game86.dll
Pax Imperia.bat
pax.pak
readme.html
This installation arrangement OK?
