Thanks to Le Ray, spending hes time on us olderly....:-)
First of all, i wish to say, that my english writting has a great deal left to be fine. Hope you all can cope with that, after all, im from Denmark, and iam sure your Danish writting has some lacking too.
This is my final voting on the map of Le Rays 2. map contest, an alaboration.
I have to say this; before i ever got in to judging job; i allway wanted it to be an 0 to 10 scores (or even 0 to 20) in the 10 different catagoties, becourse its very difficult to differentis the maps from eats other in 0 to 5, especially when there are more than 5 maps to judge.
What i mean is, that severel maps will lay to close together in point that ment to, compared to the final quality of the individual map. Hope you understand my oppinion here.
Then, i think that every judges have a mind of ther own, in how a map schould look/work like, and you may never question that, period!, yes, i said PERIOD! ;D.
But the judges have to judge the maps, however stricktly by the rules of the contest given, ofcourse. (period...lol..)
Notice: (according to nepotisme), i did not vote Le Ray as number 1. place in the 1. contest, however i did not either thought he was the worst in the contest of the Backshootters contest in the midle of 2004, thats a thing to have second thoughts about. Just look at the nice maps done in that contest.
So...where are we... ohh, yeah,, coming to it in a short...
Lets refreshed this for a moment, shall we...
Really not an easy job, is it?, yeah maybe, you just look at it and, yep, i like it!., but no, you have to be true to the catagoties, also to yourselfes...
Maps will be judged on the following catagories:
1 - Texture work - Should be neat and clean and fit well together.
2 - Originality - Map should have some originality and not a copy of another map.
3 - Game Play - Map should be fun to play on and not boring.
4 - Weapon/Health Layout - Items should be placed throughout the map for easy access.
5 - Extras in the map - Map can include secrets, jump-pads/elevators, traps, etc.
6 - Lighting - Should be pleasant to the eye.
7 - Sounds - Maps should include sounds that fit with the environment
8 - Connectivity - Map should flow smoothly from one room to another.
9 - Technical - This includes r_speeds, brush manipulation, map scaling.
r_speeds: High r_speeds = less tech points. 1000 (+/- 100) in small areas and up to 800 in general
Brush manipulation: Complex brush manipulation deserves to be credited.
Map scaling: Proportion of things amongst each other as part of effective architecture.
10 - Subjective opinion/observation - Judges own opinion on map. Breaking from the categories, what map did judge like overall.
So a flash back to what we judges deal with here:
What do we like in a map?
Gameplay?, sounds?, extras?, connectivity?, lightning?, originality, or other things, maybe, and often a combination of different things, right?.
BUT!!! we still have to be true to the rules stated in the catagories, right?
So, we have to do the right thing here.
Next chapter...
Some says:
I dont especially like jump maps.
I dont especially like Railgun maps.
I dont especially like space maps.
Hey, whats this?. Well i like anykind of maps in generally, and i still have to judge accurate for the maps, not espcially
in my liking, right?. So i do that, ofcource!.
Or;
I especially like Original maps
I especially like extras in a map
I especially like hidding/black spots in a map
Hey, whats this?. Well i like anykind of maps in generally, and i still have to judge accurate for the maps, not espcially in my liking, right?. So i do that, ofcource!.
So how do we do this?, well we do our best in an honest way, i hope.
1st. example:
In the catagory
9 - Technical - This includes r_speeds, brush manipulation, map scaling.
r_speeds: High r_speeds = less tech points. 1000 (+/- 100) in small areas and up to 800 in general
Brush manipulation: Complex brush manipulation deserves to be credited.
Map scaling: Proportion of things amongst each other as part of effective architecture.
Here you have my vote in that catagoty:
See, it is not easy becourse its really 3 different thing you have to sum up to on.
Djdm1 Averidge R-speeds was 450 and high was 900 =4
Flashq2m1 Averidge R-speeds was 500 and high was 1100 = 3
Spam Averidge R-speeds was 550 and high was 1450 = 3
LeRay32 Averidge R-speeds was 750 and high was 2100 = 2
Q2cafe Averidge R-speeds was 300 and high was 650 = 5
Eschertowers Averidge R-speeds was 499 and high was 800 = 4
Sherm_con2 Averidge R-speeds was 450 and high was 1050 = 4
Wich leaves Leray 32 last here, but then you have to ad Brush manipulation: Complex brush manipulation deserves to be credited.
Djdm1 =5
Flashq2m1 =3
Spam =3
LeRay32 =5
Q2cafe =2
Eschertowers =1
Sherm_con2 =4
Here you see what i scored in order for what i think is what is in order for the Brush manipulation.
Next is Map scaling: Proportion of things amongst each other as part of effective architecture.
Djdm1 =4
Flashq2m1 =2
Spam =3
LeRay32 =4
Q2cafe =4
Eschertowers =2
Sherm_con2 =4
Here you see what i scored in order for what i think is what is in order for the Map scaling: Proportion of things amongst each other as part of effective architecture.
Then just in this catagory i added the 3 points and had to make an under/over limit, due to that i only could give 0 to 5.
So to make a differents beetween the maps i did this;
The sum over 12 = 5
the sum over 10 = 4
the sum over 8 = 3
the sum over 7 = 2
the sum up to 7 = 1
Which add up to;
Djdm1 =5
Flashq2m1 =2
Spam =3
LeRay32 =4
Q2cafe =3
Eschertowers =1
Sherm_con2 =4
And thats how i judged the catagory 9. !! point. As you se, by here i have Djdm1 as the better one!
Wow, this letter has now allready taken more that an hour, schouldent had Marianne lieve early this evening, well, il tell my emploies to work harder tomorrow. :-)
In the rules of how the mapper schould map, it says that a map scould be original and not a copy of someelses map or an extension/remake of ones own earlier map.
A bad example of this is; the likeness beetween Sherm_con2 and Marics96 and also Flashq2m1 and flash4, not diffecult to see the resemblens. I think the 2 maps are cool but, according to the rules i have to deduct them points.
Now iam gonna have it, right?
Now iam gonna let you know, that i love Secrets, hiding places, special areas, some elevator,jumppads and teleporters.
Other judges may like spacemaps, jumpmaps or railmaps and so on. Thats the way it is and schould be with different judges.
We are not judging only a railmap! or a space map. We are judging a DM-map!
So maybe i schould make some remakes on the mappers maps.
Many things have allready been said and i wount like to be an ecco here...so a small version...
Djdm1:
Simply loved you map, original and with very nice gameplay, less than 6 player is a bit borring thou. The curves, man.. wow..
Fast game. Colour and sounds great.
Flashq2m1:
Nice map, felt like iv run this map before. Bad connectivity throu-out the map unless you are going down..remember no hook allowed. And how to get to the roof without a hook, did i mis a secret?. More sounds, spacelike would be nice.
Spam:
Very nice texturework. misses some originality, The extras seems a bit ot, why running around in the passage when you are not able to shoot anyone from there? (unless they are in the passage too). A bit big but fast when you are enough players. Connectivety is poor. And sounds?.
Leray32:
Very nice map, texturework perfect, Did you see the fog crawling down the floor in the teleporter-room, thats fantastic. Good work. Like you continuity of the walls/siling/halls and openings to the halls, seem like a real arkitecture-deal. Not a hole buns of different shapes and boxes put together. Lots of small hidding places/dark corners. The sounds are great especially the trap sound. Nice to see different maps everytime you go at it.
Q2cafe:
The idea of making a Café map wasent bad. But i guess you lost track of time there. Somehowe it was kinda fun, just closing my eyes keeping the fire-buttom locked and do that for 10 min. and then open my eyes again to see who won the game.
But really thats not me and i dont like railgun-maps either. A lot of fancy texture but not very well fit together. No sounds?.
Eschertowers:
I somehowe felt i was set back 5 years. Connectivity was really bad (no hook) and item placement was sometimes hard to find. The gameplay was bad, like one map in the buttom areas and one map on the top. Sounds?. This is definity not my kind of map.
But maybe in another MOD it will work.
Sherm_con2:
Also great texturework. Very nice map indeed, but havent i seen this map somewhere before?..just a feeling. Very nice colouring/lighting. Troully a nice gameplay and the connectivity is ok. Loved to sit on the top fragging everybody who dared come up there. Not much extras, but nice weapon-layout. Good tecnical work.
So, thats it.
As you se, all of us judges proberbly have different oppinion about maps and Mods and howe to play them.
But one thing is for sure, maps are not supposed just to be seen or looked at, but to be played on for real.
In all respect for all mappers and judges who was involved in this contest, i wish to say. Very well done everyone.
Good job done and thx. LeRay.
