It's more of a standalone game now than a Quake2 engine.. similar to how QuakeWorld kinda changed the aspect of Quake a little. But yeah, Jay seems like he knows what he's doing on it.

Fair enough. It still seems pretty darn cool though, only played it for a few minutes so far.

A little bird told me that some very prominent q2 mappers have been working away in the shadows making new maps for it too! I like that they decided to keep the ability to play legacy q2 maps as well.

It's not bad! Certainly looks like the environment work that Jester and I slaved over will finally become a standard, but there is always room for improvement!

Hey guys,
The team is by no means exclusive. If you'd like to create levels for Q2W, get in touch on IRC. We're in #quetoo on irc.freenode.net.
Some things that Q2W has over stock Q2 from a mapper's point of view:
Massive performance enhancements raise r_speeds limits to around 10K (that's 10,000 wpolys).
A materials system allows for Quake3-style texture animations, reflective environment map effects, glow/flare effects, and more.
All popular texture formats are supported: TGA, JPG, PNG.
Our GPL bsp compiler offers Phong shading and sunlight; you no longer have to use a separate closed-source program to create beautiful static lighting.
Atmospheric effects like rain, snow, and colored fog are accomplished by a simple worldspawn key.
The game also supports FFA, TDM, CTF, and Arena right out of the box. So you can map for some of the most popular "mods" right away.
Hope to hear from some of you soon,
Jay

greetings jay. since my mapping is currently going stronger I could well imagine making maps for Quake2World soon. but right now Q2W is only crashing for me. support for graphic cards like GF 5200 would be a good thing, or at least some compatibility mode.

It should run fine on that card. Altho, I doubt GLSL will work for you. You can try setting "r_programs 0" to disable GLSL. Also, you may want to add r_lightmapsize 512 to your config file. (Application Data\Quake2World\default\quake2world.cfg).
What kind of crashes are you getting? Does stderr.txt contain anything interesting or useful? I would try to catch up with myself or Ingar on IRC if you can.
For what it's worth, I've seen the game run quite well on a GeForce 3 and an Intel 935.

also won't run with these config changes. in win2k it runs for a moment and then silently quits, the log ends with "initializing video.." in win98 the console shows up, before the cfg was changed it was freezing the system when I started a map, now it crashes with a windoes error. Interesting. The Q2W Win32 port maintainer is also German, and so I'm sure he's tested it with German localization on both XP and 2K. If you want some help, I'd hop on irc.freenode.net, #quetoo, and ask for a hand getting it to run inside the debugger. It's not terribly difficult. That way, we could see exactly where it's crashing and patch it.
