Wish I could get back into this but how, I have no idea when QERadiant doesn’t seem to work on anything other than 32bit Windows OS. Still, good to see some of you guys still here!

Let your mind’s eye go to work here...check out some H. R. Geiger or H. P. Lovecraft for some inspirational reading. Trust me...your mind can imagine more disturbing and wonderful things than imagery ever could. Good luck!

I can't imagine anyone in NEED of a software rendering mode with all the graphics chipsets available today unless you went back to an original spec system with absolutely NO graphics acceleration. Still, would be a neat project to work on. I seem to recall a few old-head Q2 mappers that loved to work on problems...ahem...(yeah, I'm pointing at Jester/Fi3nd and Musashi...)
I think your biggest hurdle to making this worth while is having enough people download and swap the palettes. You could have the greatest map ever created but if no one plays it, who would ever know?

I created a Facebook community dedicated to Old School FPS games called "Binary Space Partition". It's live now, and will see the first "scheduled" post at midnight CST tonight promoting LeRay's Quake 2 Cafe. Please join me in getting this community off the ground and back among the stars with the theme of most of our favorites from the recent and not so recent past. I am in search of another motivated person within the the community and it doesn't have to be Quake 2 only. Follow the link below and get involved in making this thing great! m.facebook.com/bsppanzer/

Is anyone here using Win10 for their setup? I keep hearing bad things about Win10 with older games and know nothing about how level editors and other mapping tools (Wally, QRad, etc) behave in a 64 bit environment. So...do I jump on board with a Win10 setup or try to find a Win7 machine to get back on this damn horse!??

BTW...SnapMap is not nearly as feature rich as you would hope. Only one theme or style of rooms (base) is available. No open sky levels...no hell levels...and you can't adjust room sizes for something like a floater map. Very disappointed so far

The multiplayer sucks but the single player is worth the full price. It's an "E-ticket" express, joy ride through Hell! I think a lot of people have missed this this style of game more than they care to admit and hopefully the days of "CoD - insert year" are coming to an end!

If you are really interested in figuring out how to do this, download any of the Neal&Bob maps if you can find them. Jester and I used a lot of brushes that moved on func_train setups to show players where to go and draw attention to certain locations. This could easily be used to set up your doors, but keep in mind that the map_light will make those door pieces dark if they are in the open position (retracted into the walls) when the lighting is done in the compiler and you will also have to account for where those door pieces go (make very thick floors/ceilings for recesses). Good luck...it won't matter how long you work with Q2, you will always run across something that makes you ask "how do I make this work?"

On 20160513 at 0500 Zulu, we embark on a new mission, a new opportunity, a fresh start if you will. Our world is in peril and there is no denying we have a Hell of a fight at hand, but our goal is clear: Kill them all or die trying!
Our first assault will begin shortly after the mission time listed above. Our first priority will be to close the portal. Once that has been achieved, we will move operations out of the labs and clear the rest of the base. It is imperative that we accomplish our mission. Billions of lives, nay, ALL of humanity, is at stake here and we simply CANNOT FAIL!
As usual, I will ask for volunteers, but make no mistake, we ALL will enter this fight and we must succeed.
I ask that you give all you can in this most dire of moments. I can be contacted through sub-space communications up until 20160513 at 0200 Zulu when our team will enter a communications blackout as we approach the planet and enter the base.
I will leave comms open until that time. Godspeed, good luck and FIGHT LIKE HELL!!!

An old Q2 mapper named Sven wrote an article called Obsolete Creativity in which he compared working within the confines of the Q2 engine to that of photography and how it didn't replace painting, but rather pushed painters to experiment with new ways of expression within the medium. I'll see if I can find that article and post it up. can be found in internet archive. interesting read .... Sven's HomepageThanks brother! I searched high and low and never ran across that site. I think everyone still mapping for Q2 would do themselves a great service in reading through some of his articles. Again, thanks for the assist!

The best part about the project I worked on was it worked with vanilla Q2. There's just something really cool about taking what is already there and doing things with the engine that no one would ever expect it to be able to do like the falling rain in Jester's "Buzzkill".
