SALUTATIONS! I still check this website, apparently. My inability to move on from the past and unwillingness to move forward has led me to your post. My loss is your gain! Unfortunately, I killed my server some time ago. I had the intention of getting the server on the goto network on TastySpleen, but since the source code for Vortex is such a hellish, ungodly nightmare sent straight from the deepest bowels of the dark lord Satan's rectum, I couldn't get Q2Admin to work, which is what is needed in order for the WallFly bot to be compatible with your server. That's why in my OP, I said the server is "not 100% set up the way I want it to be". If I can't get it to be 100% perfect for me, it's not good enough. I simply didn't feel like paying for a server that was just going to stagnate and not go anywhere. I do, however, have the entire server, characters, maps and all, backed up on an external hard drive that sits safely upon my computer desk. So in the miraculous circumstance that an angel comes down from God's pearly gates and decides to bestow upon me a fully-functioning gamei83.so of version 2.65 of the Chilean Vortex mod that works with Q2Admin, then the prospect of revitalizing my old Vortex server won't be too hard of a task for me to accomplish. -? I can't actually help you but wish I could. Regardless, that is one whoopassed post full of bruise-purple prose. I like it!

holy cow what a cool thread to start off the 20th anniversary year of quake 2. welcome Knightmare - thank you guys for keeping quake2 mapping forum going here. man I have some thoughts. I'm a railwarz player (also play lfire ctf, expert ctf, dm, rocket arena, jump) and we had a great 2016 with a kind of unofficial map thing happening. last year 5 new ctf maps were created and we continue to enjoy playing them in railwarz. macanah made bite ctf. newbie made one (always forget his' name but its awesome map). and legendary railwarz player KiD made 3 maps, trapped, theshack and fatal2way. We have a lot of cool things coming up for this big anniversary year, map-wise: the first new CTF map of 2017 is currently being play tested on our servers, made by Lil' Goner, it's amazing let me see if I can put up a little preview today. Lil' Goner also made the amazing map Fort Supertough (fortsup.bsp) Slime Mixer (slimyctf.bsp) amongst others, and was part of COD Combat Oriented Designs back in the day. Maric we obsess over your CTF maps to this day. The Pit and Variation on the Blues are probably the big 2 for the whole community, but many of the top players love Valley of the Shadow (myself included.) I also go through these weird phases where all I want is Ride the Dragon Lite, and late at night I'm prone to 1v1 and 2v2 CTF matches on Underneath with the gravity turned to 300. Love the fast hook over the 3D terrain. Anyway I could go on and on - like the other day when I met Underlord for the first time on voice chat, so much fun. The thing is, we are an active player and mapper community, and we are looking at 2017 as a year to grow. I am going to be shining a light on map making because that's a big part of what keeps the game going. There are at least 3 unreleased maps from back in the day - Maric I know you had an error in Marics 8 (or maybe 7? or 9?) and so that was never released, because you'd already finished the next numbered level. Is there any chance that you have that .bsp - or unreleased CTF maps - that you would share with us to play railwarz on? The cool thing about railwarz ctf is that you don't need to place any items - it's instagib all rail CTF with fast hook, so no item placement is needed. I reached out to Hafhead and he may be sharing with us his unreleased CTF map - the first and only custom skybox he ever made - called Tubby Bomb Factory. And if anyone has contact info for ProdigyXL I would really appreciate sharing with me please - ProdigyXL has an unreleased small CTF map (those work the best in 2017) xlctf1. OK thank you guys again for all the amazing fun you have created over the years, still being enjoyed on a daily basis, you guys are legends. Thanks for all the kind words. Underlord is truly a great guy. We chat on the phone fairly often. In fact he's about the only old timer I'm in contact with (aside from the miscreants here :-). I should install the chatty thing you guys use and try to catch up. I usually turn into a pumpkin fairly early...two jobs and one of them had no time limits. I have a shoddy connection now so my playing days are still in the past or maybe somewhere in the future. I do have at least one almost finished ctf map, unlit and no entities. I'll see if I can dig it up. If I find it is there someone that would want it and flesh out the final details? I do think of new ideas and designs all of the time, just no motivation and or free time to make 'em happen.

jo m, well, I do have some free time at my hands .... enough for some mapping, if it wasn't for my damned laziness .... doing sports is of course a good thing to stay in shape. I don't do it systematically, only here and there. I am currently halfway satisfied with my condition, but it could still get a lot better. about the age - keep in mind that *a man is as old as he feels* and *old age aint no place for sissies* yep, the Quack Too scene has become very tiny - with even planetquake been shut down. still, there is something special about this game. once captured by it, you will always return. nice song, m. I also like it *proggy* , Yes, Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator, Soft Machine .... and a lot of others. here a cool song by The Strawbs: The Strawbs - Tomorrow As for staying in shape, I'll quote Indiana Jones here "It's not the years, it's the mileage" although age isn't making it any easier. That is some oooooold school prog. I used to listen to a lot of that but have been polluted by the modern stuff, particularly Anathema. That and a load of post rock these days - Oh Hiroshima, Jakob, Message To Bears, Astralia, The Living Sleep to name a few.

sup m ! well, we are still young at heart, no ? at least i have ambitions to get back into mapping (I mean the creation of road maps, of course ....) sup? = Dang busy these days but I don't mind. How about with you? I keep telling myself I'm young. In fact I took up running/jogging a few years ago and discovered that young at heart and young in body are two very different things. I still do major cardio but all low impact on the bones and muscles. I still run a few miles once in awhile because reasons. I certainly want to map, always have and will always miss it. It's awfully hard to get motivated to use what little free time I have making something so few people will bother with. Brings to mind this amazing song from this wonderful group, and one of my all time favorite bands. www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_QZzb9WONg

What is this Quack Too thing you guys keep posting about? And maps? You mean like road maps?
Yeah, that wasn't funny at all. BUT, howdy ya'll! It's been long and longer. I do miss the grand old times we had when we were young whippersnappers.

Thanks Null and Maar! But the dinosaur has wandered into a tar pit and succumb to the depredations of time and neglect. What I'm trying to say is that the old PC pictured has given up the ghost. My mapping future is in serious doubt now. I may need to pull out before things even get started. It things turn out that way, I'd be happy to be a judges if that's wanted or needed.

Heh, my technical sk1llz and savvy are still without rival...not! I've been unable to get Tread working on my Win7 machine thus and thus I had to dig through a dark closet, do battle with 8-legged critters but behold, my 10 year old mapping dinosaur rises from the past. It's dusty, noisy, Win2k and still ready to rock!

If I'm allowed in the playground, count me in for a map. That's if those old, retired and rusty map-muscles still work.

hi maric i need the add on file for my map editor -quark- ti make some maps for the awaken2 mod do u know where i can get it or maybe email it to me macanah203@gmail.com ty if ne1 can help ok bye Hey macanah! I do have that on another PC. It's more or less lines of """code""" that need to go into your editor definition files. I'm not sure how Quark implements that sort of thing, but I'm certain others here will know what to do. Tomorrow I'll get that other machine up and running and copy the relevant information into this thread. I'm an early riser for work and am squeezed for time tonight. If that doesn't suffice, I can always send the Tread definition files that I used to whomever can make it all work. It's such a great mod with so many cool elements that Musashi added in the version 2 iteration. I only wish I had the connection to play it with people again. Here's the entire file that Tread uses to create .maps and the rest of the black magic that makes finished .bsp files. There was so much Awakening specific stuff I figured the whole thing might have the most value. I copied into a .rtf file which seemed like the most accessible format for me (and hopefully for you too). Attachment Deleted

Hey Maric! Great to see you haven't forgotten about this place, and that you're still frequenting this forum. We really like your maps, and our players can't get enough although they could use some more variations now that you seem to be less active or maybe moved on to other things. Would you mind sharing some of your .map prefabs or better yet .map sources if that's not to much to ask? This way we can continue your legacy and carry on making solid maps in the classic Maric style that everyone loves. I think even a slight .map source infusion here could help breathe new life into the somewhat stagnant Quake2 multiplayer, or our small mapping community and help keep it going for many years to come. Some would consider no better Quake Christmas gift than more Maric styled maps, and layouts to reverse engineer P.S. Right now we're experimenting with some organic rock geometry, such as islands. What would be really awesome is if we could marry this with some of your classic base prefabs leray.proboards.com/thread/3577/pirate-fortress-new-tropical-island?page=1&scrollTo=26712Howdy Null! And thanks. I've been around a little bit but not as often as I'd like. This is and has always been a great place with class people. Of course now that I'm posting again, the quality will fall off a bit ;-) You're welcome to all of the files I have, albeit I don't have the .map files laying around. I can do you one better however and make the version of Tread I use available and all of the .trd files that I still have. Using them, you could open the maps up in their native environment, copy-paste-compile-mix'n'match anything you want. I have 198 "finished" .trd files and 181 "in progress" .trd files. Many of the in progress files represent unreleased ideas and bits, several are nearly completed maps for an SP episode I was messing with. If that works for you, it's all yours with no strings attached. In all my .txt files with all my maps I scrapped the ideas of "IP" on design anyway, so take what you want and do what you will. The one issue is that the files weigh in at about 420 MB. I have a bandwidth cap at home. I can take them with me to work and upload the files there but where can I put something that big that's convenient? Also, if you want/need something specific I'd be happy to make it for you. I just finished authoring the last book in my series. It goes to the publisher shortly and I now have what's known as "free time" again. I have to fill it with something other than physical labor.

Boo!
Agreed with all of the above. Chris (Sven) was/is a very intelligent dude and a nice guy ta'boot. He was one of the nuts that drove 1/3 of the way down/across the US to join us in one of our Backshooter's Lan parties waaaaaaaay back in the day.

Absolutely incredible!
And, shame on me for never giving you proper feedback. To be honest, it would've been nearly impossible to offer and credible criticism, it's just that good.

Hey mac,
I wish I could help you with quark, but alas, I have no m4d sk1lz for it. I will however always remember that mod with great affection. Musashi did an amazing job with the programming, he could whip out new features like crazy.
I wish I had the connection to play again. The Guass pistol, the Gravity Gun, the Spike Gun...oh my! The assault maps I made for it were about my favorite creations ever, and the closest I came to making something resembling SP gameplay (sort of).

HEY!
It's a beautiful map, for a great game, that I wish I had time for.
I'm sorry for my loooooong absence, but life is crammed and jammed. There are so many things pulling me in so many directions, I don't have the time I used to for Q2 :-(
You're making spectacular maps though! I do get a chance to play around in them.
