Hello everyone.
My Quake 2 online name is Leader [T3]. We run a small Quake 2 server in Florida. Just a bunch of friends playing Quake 2 for fun, having a good time.
I have been coming to this mapping board for about a month, looking at and downloading some of the maps here. They are EXCELLENT! Keep up the good work guys.
I myself am not a mapper, nor is anybody in my clan. But we are very interested in custom maps. We are always on the lookout for a new and exciting map to add to the server.
We really like big maps. Maps that resemble Quake 3 style of play. Gothic textures, jump pads, and things like that.
Recently while surfing the internet I found a map done by someone named Zenway. It is a remake of the Quake 3 campgrounds map. I don't think this map is an actual conversion of a Quake 3 map. Instead, I think the mapper spent alot of time recreating the map in the Quake 2 format. Me and everyone at the server were very impressed with this map. It is now the most played map on my server. It has the jump pads, the great looking textures, it really looks and feels like your playing Quake 3.
What I was wondering is, do any of you guys know if this mapper Zenway, has made any other Quake 3 recreations? Because I haven't been able to find any others anywhere. Does he have a website?
Also, I was wondering. Is it possible to play Quake 3 maps in Quake 2? Because I know there is a program that will convert a Quake 2 map to play in Quake 3.
But I have not been able to find anything mucn on the subject of converting Quake 3 maps to play in Quake 2. Surely I'm not the first person to ever think of this. Is there not much info available on this subject simply because it's impossible? Or just soo hard to do that it's not worth the trouble?

Hello LeaderT3 and welcome to the Cafe'. Thanks for becoming a member! Nice to hear you guys have a small server, that's great! I feel we do have a great group of mappers here, who create some great maps for Q2. Thanks! I have never seen the map by Zenway, but maybe some of the others here can help you out with this? As far as Q3 maps in Q2.... I don't know that one either, sorry. I hope someone else here can answer your questions and thanks for stopping by, hope to see you more often.

Oh wow, LERAY! Thanks for replying soo quickly!
First, let me say, we have tried quite a few of your maps on my server. I think the most popular one was your new one, THE SHAMROCK! That place is great! Very original. Everyone loves the noise it makes when you jump onto the spinning shamrocks below, hehe.
The Zenway map I'm talking about is running on my server right now, if you want to check it out. It's DEFINETLY worth the download time.
The server is at 68.200.16.34
Aww, too bad you don't know about the Quake 3 to Quake 2 conversion. Maybe it is just something that is just impossible? Who knows, hehe.

Maybe someone else here can help you. Wixen1 may be able to find something.

Leader T3...I actually reviewed that map along with another Q3DM6 conversion that was nowhere near the quality but was original brushwork. Pappy-R sent a message to Sven, the host of the site where the reviews were posted, and basically said that it was likely created using a program to convert the bsp to a map file and was then retextured with converted textures as well. In many people's opinion, including my own, the map was an exact duplicate and for that reason, Planet Quake would not allow the review to remain nor the link to the map. I can tell you it was a wonderful map and a shame that I haven't seen much like it for Quake 2. Other than that, I haven't heard anything about Zenway since that took place and it's probably because he felt the heat if you know what I mean. I wish you luck in finding some Q3A style flavor for your Q2 server. Give Backshooters a look through...you'll find lots of quality maps over there as well as on Jester's site Oh, and take a look at Jester's and my side project, "Neal&Bob" for some Q2 of a different breed

Yes it is an excellent map. I am surprised that I don't see it on alot of other Quake 2 servers.
I think it's like, the best kept secret in the Quake 2 mapping world, LOL.
I found the map by accident I think. A Quake 2 conversion by Zenway. Sounded very interesting, so I downloaded it and gave it a try.
When I first played on it I was very impressed. Excellent map to say the least. I love it and everyone at my server loves it as well. We pretty much play on it all the time, LOL.
I don't really see the big deal about converting a map from Quake 3 back to Quake 2. Apparently, there are a few programs out there that can convert Quake 2 maps to Quake 3 and nobody seems to care.
I have even seen a program that converts DOOM 3 maps to play in Quake 3, and Quake 2 maps to play in SIN.
Heck, now that I think more about it. I've stumbled across Quake 2 servers running converted DOOM 2 and WOLFSTEIN MAPS, LOL. So what the heck!
Nobody seems to care much about it. Until I mention converting Q3 maps to play in Q2. Then it seems to become an issue.
Everyone gets hush hush, nobody wants to talk about it. And nobody seems to know any program that can do it.

Yeah, this "hush-hush" stuff was really ridiculous. Quake 3 was all hype, and it was the game that earned the money for iD over half a decade (get this !!). A sellout game without much substance par excellence, it needed all the hype and was protected massively by its creators. Because it had to earn the money; and its predecessor Quake 2 remained a mighty rival. But .... Quake 2 was technically outdated and didn't earn money any more. Nonetheless, it was the better game and still attracted serious gamers. And everyone who had eyes to see knew that Quake 3 was just gay . So it was especially the backwardsconversion of Quake 3 resources to Quake 2 which was prohibited by iD themselfes. More than the conversion between any other games. Because Quake 2 remained a rival of their long-time milker Quake 3. I think that's the adequate explanation. For the program .... I am not aware of a program which can completely convert Quake 3 maps to Quake 2. It can only be done in a very extensive way with much work. You need WinBSPC, which is included in the Quake 3 toolkit(which comes usually with the GTK Radiant Editor). This is usually for creating the .aas files that the Quake 3 bots use for navigating, but you can also use it to decompile the bsp's to raw .map files which can be loaded into an editor. During this decompiling process WinBSPC destroys both texturing and lighting of the map. I guess this is intentionally. The map will cause you as much work to re-create as if you create a new one from scratch, obviously to deter people from decompiling Q3 maps. However, the raw map file (as messed up as it is) is still recognized as a Quake 3 map file by the editor, but it is easy to manipulate since it is a plain text file. Get a text editor (a "pure" editor that's useable for hacking, like notepad ) and load some Quake 2 map file ( again, a raw map file with the suffix ".map" , not a ready compiled ".bsp") , open the map like any text document, look at the header and copy it (precisely), then open your Quake 3 .map file and overwrite its header with the one from the Quake 2 map. Then you will easily be able to load this map file with your Quake 2 editor, it will be recognized as a Quake 2 map. The rest is editing, editing .... recreating the texturing and lighting, correcting brush errors, deleting Quake 3 entities and replacing them with their Qauke 2 equivalents. You could as well recreate a Q3 map from scratch. I am not aware of an easier way to do this. As I said the conversion of resources from Quake 3 to Quake 2 was restricted all the time, until Doom 3 came out. The only good thing about Doom 3 is that it finally finished the all too extended era of Quake 3. ;D

WOW thanks for all this info.
I have WINBSP and have tried to load a Quake 3 map into it. But it always gets an error.
Am I using a wrong version or something?
