Greetings... I hope I'm posting this in the right place. If not, kill me!
I have Quake 2 and am enjoying it a lot. I recently aquired Quake 2 The Reckoning mission pack and I cannot get it to load. I keep getting an Installer Wizard issue... then the screen freezes. I have to do the old three finger dance to get things unclogged.
Can anyone offer an old newish gamer some advice, please?
Cheers, Cooldragon

hello cooldragon. you don't need the install program, you can browse the CD and find everything in there. just make a folder "xatrix" under your Quake 2 directory, then look into "Data\all" on your CD and copy everything you find there to your xatrix folder (pak0.pak, gamex86.dll), then goto "Data\max" on your CD, there is "xatrix\video" inside it. copy this "video" folder also to the xatrix on your HD. this is everything you need to run The Reckoning. and welcome to the Q2 Cafe, btw.

Thank you for your welcome, and for your expeditious response, zyx. Why do the buggers make it so difficult, I wonder?
The manual says that when one loads The Reckoning it updates Quake 2, and one loses all saved games. Is that correct? I don't really care, but I'd like to know.

Only if you don't have the 3.20 patch already. The 3.14 -> 3.20 update of Q2 had a protocol change, therefore old demos do not work.

OK, I did all that. Still doesn't work. Any ideas....?

Well you need to run the Xatrix mod, by popping open Quake2 and typing "game xatrix". Quake2 itself doesn't change, The Reckoning (and Ground Zero) are just mods.

Sorry, Paril... your insider speak falls on old deaf ears here. 'Popping open' Quake 2 and typing 'game xatrix' is confusing. 'Run it?' Would you mind treating me as an idiot, please>

And how do I know that the add-on has worked?

;D well, using a good oldfashioned batch file is the most basic way. create a new text file in "xatrix" and write: cd.. quake2 +set game xatrix +set skill 3 then close the text file and rename it to "xatrix.bat". start it by double-clicking it. this should run quake 2 and with the mod xatrix. then start a game using the ingame GAME menu. Paril is taking about the Quake 2's console in which you can type commands during runtime. this console is opened with the tilde key. this can also be used to change the mod and pretty much any parameter of the game. but using the console is power user stuff.

And how do I know that the add-on has worked? first you will see the xatrix logo and a different console background.

Batch files are worse. I don't even know every command that a batch file can have yet. -Paril

OK, fellers... thanks again. I'll have to download the patch overnight as we have a very slow dial-up here in rural NZ (16.8kps average).
May I show you what I've done so far:
In the Quake 2 folder I started a new file called 'xatrix.' In that I have two folders: 'Video' and 'Docs,' and also gamex86.dll and pak0.pak. Is this OK so far?
Then I went to the CD and to Data>max>video and copied that folder into the xatrix file.
Now I can play? I'll go try and see what happens. Sorry to be such a dunce, guys.... I'm a bit new at this.
Cheers, cooldragon
