OK, I've tried once again to install the game... as before, I get the first splash screen which offers me three choices: Install, Help or Quit. When I click Install the game begins to transfer files but immediately I get a dialogue box up which tells me that I have a problem with the InstallShieldEngine, and wants to close.
What am I doing wrong?

You don't go through there, once you manually copy files you have it installed.

yeah, once you have copied the files to your harddisk into the folder "xatrix" under the Quake 2 directory, you don't need the CD anymore. lay it aside. now you just have to start Quake 2 with the mod xatrix, using a batch file as mentioned above. write THIS into a fresh text file (I assume you know how to do this) which you create in your "xatrix" folder: cd .. quake2 +set game xatrix +set skill 3 then rename it to "xatrix.bat" and double-click on it. then use the ingame menu to start a game. [EDIT: Modified by Paril, you forgot space between cd and .. XD)

[EDIT: Modified by Paril, you forgot space between cd and .. XD) nevermind, it works without space too. my own batch files look exactly like this.

alright. another possibility is this one: right-click on your quake2.exe to get the windows context menu and choose : create shortcut. this will create a shortcut to start Quake 2. after that you right-click on the shortcut and select "properties". then you go to the line "Target" and add after quake2.exe: +set game xatrix. that's it. the game will run xatrix after that, you can begin a new game with the ingame menu.

Does that work with the space between + and set? Not sure if Q2 likes whitespace or not..

This is what the Shortcuts look like when you use the install program. Target: F:\Quake2\quake2.exe +set cddir D:\install\data +set basedir F:\Quake2 Target: F:\Quake2\quake2.exe +set game xatrix +set cddir D:\data\max Target: F:\Quake2\quake2.exe +set game rogue +set cddir D:\data\max X7

oh man, can you imagine how confusing this must get for a noob ? screw cddir and everything, he needs "quake2.exe +set game xatrix" Paril, it should work with or without space in between, why not just test it ?

ew.. console... hail OOP!!!
consoles are oldskool -- only understood by geeks like us. too complicated. point; click, done!

Your post is very incorrect. Quake4 and Quake Wars are object oriented, yet the console is possibly the most controlling aspect of the game.
