Just downloaded and played through the FEAR SP demo. It was very short for the ~700 MB download (< 20 mins), but great fun. The map that came with the demo looked rather boring (little detail, rather monotonous, empty rooms with some models added here and there) though. And the game felt a little bit like a console title.
Anyone played the full version? Opinions? Do you agree with my impressions? I'm thinking about buying the game but I'm not 100% sure about it due to some of the impressions mentioned above...

My impressions are solely based on the Xbox360 version...
-The levels/maps are very bland and same-ish pretty much all the way through BUT for whatever reason it works to make something better than the sum of...yadda, yadda...
-There are horror elements that had little impact on me one way or the other. They weren't creepy nor were they overly annoying. I guess they were there to drive the story but I could've done without them.
-The firefights/action/fun-factor...in other words what I care most about were tops. Once I started in, I played through in about a week which is fast for me. (I'm pretty slow at progressing through games, I'm usually only good for about an hour or two at a sitting).
If you can pick it up for cheap, I think I paid about $10 for a used copy, it's certainly worth the romp.

Thanks for your opinion! The problem with picking up games cheap is that I live in Germany. The games you can get for a few bucks are german versions that suck more often than not. If the voices are german, forget about it at once. They often sound ridiculous. But it's not (only) about the dubbing voices, it's about the translations and the language itself. Many things sound a bit funny to me and this really sucks for games that are meant to be creepy. Some games are also modified for the german market in astonishing ways. This is a worst case I hope, but watch this video of the german edition of HalfLife if you don't know what they did to that game here. Note that the enemy soldiers are robots and that the scientists seat themselves and shake their heads instead of dying when they get killed. So you have to buy imported games from the UK or US, and they are usually more expensive here 'cause they need to be imported. Another downside is that you are not allowed to offer these games in the public or advertise them here. This means that people who bought them can't just sell them on ebay because that is illegal. You actually have to send a scan of your passport to german online shops to access a part of the website that shows these titles. In real stores, you have to ask the staff for them. This makes buying used copies very hard... EDIT: Fixed the broken video link.

Exactly. Thanks, X7! Didn't notice that that link was also broken. (It's also broken when I click on it at google now. Strange.)

FEAR is an amazing game. I bought the special pack that comes with the original game plus its two "sequels". The sequels were made by other people, so they don't actually count or reflect much of anything from the original game, but they were decent. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, the true sequel to the original game, is due out early next year. Gave the demo another go and watched some videos of the game on youtube. I decided to order the pack Subatomic mentioned. It's called 'Platinum Edition' and comes with Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate. EDIT (feels like I've edited every single post I made on these forums btw): Did anyone in here ever make a map for FEAR? I found this post at Filefront that links to the SDK but the FEAR forums there are dead (not a single post in the last 30 days), so is fearmaps.com. Do you know any FEAR mapping communities or websites that have some tutorials?

I thought it was pretty decent, played nice was fun no real complaints about the levels pretty standard fare.

wow...who knew Germany was like that...And I find it strange that countries like germany are more strict on the violence in games and looser when it comes to things like nudity and sex.
As for FEAR, (I understand this is way late) but I have the MP standalone, FEAR Combat. It's a pretty fun alternative to the normal MP games.
