I'll have to travel to Bavaria for a job soon that requires me to stay in the country, at the back of beyond. I may not even have access to the internet at the boarding-house where I am supposed to stay, so I'm looking for a decent FPS game that runs well on my laptop (ATI X1400) and has a good SP mode.
SOF2 came to my mind because it has the Q3A engine (this means it runs fast and I could maybe even make a map for it). I've downloaded and played the SP demo. I liked it but found it quite hard and didn't find any difficulty settings.
Additionally, the number of times you can save per mission was limited in the demo and I really hate that. Is this in there cause the game was developed for some retarded console and nobody bothered to fix it for the PC version or was it done on purpose to annoy the people who buy and play the game? What about the retail version?
The maps looked pretty good and interesting, the was a mission on a ship at night in really bad weather and another one in the jungles of Columbia. I don't think it's gonna become one of my favourites, but it should be ok to sweeten my trip, shouldn't it?
Did or does somebody play it? Opinions? What about MP, I didn't try that yet?

I have the game. It's not that bad of a game. It's pretty fun with an infinite replay value due to the custom-random mission generator.
It does have a few difficulty along with a custom difficulty. The difficulties are based on several thing like enemy health, amount of ammo and health available, how much damage you take, and the number of saves. Yes, number of saves. It's been a while but I believe you can change the number of saves in the custom difficulty.
The limited saves was to make a mission harder and more stressful (an more frustrating) so the player had to carefully choose wherer they wuld save.
I agree that it may not be your favorite game but it may be worth keeping in your collection of games.
As for MP, it's been a long time since I've played online but when I was, it was pretty sweet. You have the traditional TDM and FFA but (if i remember correctly) you have CTF and search and destroy. I'm sure there's a cult following much like Q2 but I honestly can't tell you if people are still playing.
And for map making, I know gtk radiant can make SOF2 maps, and i'm sure others can too. However, I personally haven't made any so I can't explain how well that works.
Well, I hope this helps.

I've got the full version and I loved it when I first played it. Replay value? yeah it's there, but not if you play it through constantly. I still have to get past parts I don't really like in order to reach parts that I do like...It's like that with some games these days, but over all, it's very enjoyable to play. I've tried to map for it, but that was with my old PC and it took ages to load any of the textures because they're all hi-res. Now I have a Quad-Core PC it should be a better experience, but there's really only a select amount of themes you can really map for...But then, that's the same for Quake 2, unless you go completely nuts and make new textures and models... Give it a go, you can do that...It's a good game - get's an 8/10 from me

Thanks for the information and your opinions! Ordered it and it arrived today, just installed it. As methanewarfare said, there's difficulty settings available (unlimited saves at easiest, but that's most likely too easy for me, whatever). I'll play SP on that trip and decide whether it's worth to mke a map for it when I'm back home and find the time to play some MP.

I played through half of the game and I must say that it's rather average and even below my expectations. The SP missions are very diverse and the scenery and maps look ok, but some models (like cars and helicopters) look really crappy. I liked the jumgle missions.
The fights are ok but get a bit boring after a while because they are always the same. I got killed by grenades I didn't see or hear from time to time and the stealth missions are really annoying -- once the alarm gets activated, you can't turn it off again and have to reload or shoot your way through dozens of enemies, which feels rather absurd. The normal missions and fights are better than the stealth missions imo.
On the MP side, the title lacks bots (as many others do) which makes creating maps for it less fun and rewarding. I searched for third-party bots and used the ones that come with Goldrush mod, they were pretty good for some of the game modes. Some of the MP maps look fun, gotta check them out in greater detail, same goes for some of the MP game modes.

It's not that bad bad I doubt I'll play through the rest of the SP missions. But it runs very well on my old hardware and I still expect MP to be better, we'll see.
Worth the few bucks I payed for it, but really not more imo.

Spewin man...I really like the SP missions myself, but there were a few maps, if not whole missions, that just made me cringe because of their mediocrity... Everyone has their opinion mate, and yours is yours...I noticed a lot of times with the helicopters and other vehicles that they look a bit hap-hazard with the lighting and all...Good ol BSP engines aye. If they/or someone could remake it using the Quake 4 engine I think it would look a lot better...but then SOF2 would be more suited as a soft-shadow engine game, whereas Doom3/Quake4 have very sharp shadows. which wouldn't make the game look that good. Anyway I am rambling on, so I'll go now and leave it at that...I know I still like it as a game though. to me it's a classic.

I never played through the SP missions, but after my last post I played SOF2 MP for like 8 weeks and it was really great fun. I mostly played CTF, some very cool maps there and you still find some very well-maintained and active servers. The fire grenades really add the the depth of the game, especially in CTF. The weapons are pretty cool and seem well balanced. SG is cool. I'd say the game was really worth the money I spent on it, MP is definitely great fun. This thread just reminded me to install SOF2, btw. It was on my laptop that was stolen some month ago and I completely forgot about it.
