WEll I finally got myself a full on genuine copy of XP, but I wanted to get it in 64-bit so I could use all my memory, instead of being rrestricted to only being able to use 2Gb, of whatever 32-bit XP limits you to.
Now, I cannot understand this, but I can't install Quake 1 on my PC, even when I try and use the "Setup.exe" Windows installer, all it says is "the image file E:\SETUP.EXE is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine"
WTF? I just wanna friggin install it and play it!
Quake 2 Installs fine.

Did you try to install in some of the compatibility modes (right-click the exe => "properties => run in compat mode" or sth like that)? If that doesn't help you may want to try the nquake installer or similar things (just install it, then drop pak0 from your Q1 CD into the install dir, play). EDIT: you could also use the darkplaces engine.

I managed to get it installed from the CD using DOSBox and using the DOS "install.bat" file - just typed "install" after I mounted both the harddrive and cdrom drives, then I installed DarkPlaces and also have the Hi-Res textures, and it looks great...Bit over all the orange lighting though, but hey, it looks better than stock, so I shouldn't complain
