I wasn't really sure where to put this, but i've searched around for a few days now and not found any threads for it. If it belongs somewhere more specific, please redirect me to the proper place.
My goal, pretty simply is to learn how to change which track from the cd each map in single player defaults to for background music. i have the n64 Q2 soundtrack, and i wanted to swap out the Sonic Mayhem tracks for it; i always loved the slower, more suspenseful level exploration that those tracks gave the game (amazing pace changes between when they know you're there and when they don't, and quake is one of the few games that can do both paces well), and i'm tired of having to use console commands to alter it every time a map loads. I'm trying to stick with the themes the tracks were originally used on; for instance, the song that plays on the N64 Prison map i'm putting in the Torture Chambers map on PC, and the N64 Geothermal Station is going into the Upper Mines.
I thought i found what i was looking for with Quark when i experimented with that but i had no idea what i was doing; namely the problem i had was that anything i changed, no matter how small, crashed the game when i tried to repackage it into a .PAK file. so either a: i'm changing a value somewhere that screws it up, or b: i'm putting all the pieces back in the box wrong. with the high amount of moddability this game has, i feel pretty convinced that this is indeed possible, and that i'm just doing it wrong; i just need someone more experienced with this kind of thing to show me how to do it right. plus, if i know the method, then when i get ahold of Reckoning and Ground Zero, i can apply the changes to those as well.
the other thing i'd like to do, but this is a bit more complicated, is to put in the main menu music, and to use the "level complete" track on the screen that shows when you complete a unit. these things are more just wishful thinking, but they would be nice touches to have.
if you're looking for the N64 soundtrack yourself, go to BandCamp and search for aubrey hodges. a lot of the console ports from around the beginning of the 64-bit era used his work, so there's some good stuff there.
i'll save my other projects for later mention, depending on motivation to complete them; i don't know a damn thing about actual level design on the quake games, so i'm not about to jump into any really complex ventures just yet.
