I'm setting up several computers for an upcoming LAN party. I'm trying to get Quake 2 on each machine, but its proving tricky.
The GOG version of Quake 2 doesn't run on some of my machines for some reason. I have no idea why, but I get an error message saying the program encountered an error and needs to close. This happens on all of the computers where I was running windows XP. I thought I would get around the problem by using KMQuake2, but it somehow inherited the same problem, but the init window displays the text
before it crashes.
However I can still run an install straight from my original CD, although it is version 3.14 so I decided to run that version through KMQuake2. Curiously, that version has no problems. A bit strange but whatever, as long as it runs it.
So I started installing that version on all my computers, but for some reason, this doesn't work on ONE machine, which is a laptop running Windows 10. It starts to run, the screen turns black, and then grey with black bars on the side, and just before it starts to play the intro movie the program exits with no error messages displayed.
It does that whether KMQuake2 is running the version I copied from the disc or from GOG. However, both original versions (the CD and the GOG install) work on that computer.
I don't know what else to troubleshoot. If I can get the GOG version to run on the windows XP computers, that would be fine and I could run that version. If I could get KMQuake2 to run on the Windows 10 laptop, that would be fine. If anyone has any ideas of what I could try to get either of those working, or at least something else I can test to troubleshoot the problem, I would appreciate the advice.
Update: I've gotten to another computer which is running windows 7 and it is having the same problem with KMQuake2 as the one running Windows 10. But of course, my computer I normally use for gaming runs Windows 7 as well. I don't know what to look for to find what is different between all these different computers. They are all different builds with different graphics cards and stats and I see no reason why KMQuake2 should not be running on any of them.
Update 2: I was trying some things, they didn't work but long story short I think I found the problem with KMQuake2 not working on
So, I had created a custom kmquake2.pk3 just to change the default loading screen and menu background. I have found that replacing this with the original kmquake2.pk3 causes the Windows 7 computer to run just fine (and I'd presume the windows 10 as well, haven't tested it.)
But it is a little stranger than that. I was running my custom kmquake2.pk3 just fine on my regular gaming computer. That is, unless, I run it from a copy of the exact same folder I've been copying to all the other computers. There is one major difference between the version that works and the one that does not: In the version that works, it appears that when I installed it, I dropped in all the kmquake2 files, and then copied in the baseq2 folder. But for the version that doesn't work, I had copied my quake 2 folder as it was isntalled, and then just dropped in the kmquake2 files.
Some further experimentation is required, but I'm going to have to do that tomorrow.
