I don't get the sound to work in Q2 Evolved. OpenAL is installed, but no sound. also tried to disable it. doesn't let me switch to DirectSound.
anything else I could try ?

Do you have an OpenAL32.dll in your Quake2 folder?

So it has the same exact file details as the screenshot I posted? What are sound-related cvars in your q2econfig.cfg file? Here's mine:
seta s_dopplerVelocity "10976.0" seta s_dopplerFactor "1.000000" seta s_rolloffFactor "1.000000" seta s_maxDistance "8192.0" seta s_minDistance "240.0" seta s_musicVolume "0.900000" seta s_sfxVolume "1.000000" seta s_masterVolume "1.000000" seta s_ignoreALErrors "1" seta s_ext_eax "0" seta s_allowExtensions "1" seta s_alDevice "DirectSound3D" seta s_alDriver "OpenAL32"

yep, tried that, but it still does not work.
strange that I can not select the sound device in the audia preferences. when I try to use DirectSound, it always switches back to MMSYSTEM.

I actually just tried playing Q2E for the first time since switching to Win8.1 (it ran fine on Win7). I get frequent crashes now in that OpenAL32.dll. I Then downloaded an OpenAL installer from here: www.openal.org/downloads/Then I removed the OpenAL32.dll in the Quake2 folder. Q2E now runs without crashing.

got it running. I scanned the computer for copies of OpenAL32.dll and removed some that might have been conflicting, then installed it new.
now it works.
