Hey all, I just found this site after buying the actual Q2 cd. Can I use the KM mods with the cd version? I'm able to run Q2 from the cd, but can't quite get it to run in fullscreen, or with the proper ratio. I also downloaded the KMQuake2_020_update7.zip as well as the q2-3.24 full ctf 1.5 file. However, when I open the KMquake2 exe(as opposed to the original quake2.exe from the cd install)it can't find the open gl renderer.
Haven't played this game in years, and I'm happy to tweak and mod as necessary to get it to run. Thanks for any input!

www.dropbox.com/s/qjjwworroms391o/Q2_GL.zip?dl=1place these besides your quake2- / kmquake2.exe. additionally, you can create a text file, call it autoexec.cfg, write: set vid_ref "r1gl" and set gl_mode "6" in it and place it in your baseq2.

KMQuake2 has been tested and developed with the original CD version, so the answer to your question is "Hell yeah!". First, you should extract the q2-3.24-x86-full-ctf-1.5 patch over the installed Quake2 folder. This updates Q2 to the latest unofficial patch and adds all the free content released by id. All you need to have installed beforehand is the pak0.pak file in the baseq2 folder and the .cin video files in the baseq2/video folder. KMQuake2 has the OpenGL renderer built in, so it doesn't have a "can't find OpenGL renderer" error. The error is most likely "Couldn't initialize OpenGL renderer", which is usually caused by not having video drivers for your GPU installed. You should copy the console ouput by clicking the "copy" button and paste it in a reply so I can examine the series of errors and figure out the cause. Also, nightly builds of KMQ2 0.20 update 8 are available here: bitbucket.org/Knightmare66/kmquake2_stable/downloads/These builds have many bugfixes and some tweaks. Furthermore, KMQ2 cannot use R1Q2's GL renderer; and it does not use the gl_mode cvar to set the video mode, either. The video mode should be set from the video menu, as the list of supported video modes is very long. BTW, setting video modes in a user-created .cfg file is not recommended, as it forces that video mode every time the game launches, and is easy to forget about.

Are you running directly from the cd? If so, just copy the "data" folder that is in the "setup" folder from the cd to your hard drive and run the game from there. Place any ports (kmq2) in that data folder -or install the game and place any mods or ports directly into C:\Quake2 or wherever the game installed.

Hey, thanks big time for the wealth of info! Badass. I just got back in, so just now working through things. This is on my old travel/workhorse Dell Vostro 1520, win 10 pro build 1863, core 2 duo, 2.2 ghz with 8gb ram, but nonetheless.
So far I have: 1. Installed the 3.24 over the original Q2 exe. Pak0Pak file is present, and the .cin files are present in the baseq2/video folder 2. Downloaded and placed the Q2_GL files beside the exe's.........
Rebooted, and fired up KM_Quake, but another error, as follows...

Oh, yes I'm able to run the original Q2 from the exe installed from the disc. But like I said, it's not quite full screen, and appears to be in a windowed mode. There's a bar at the top of the screen that says Quake 2. I'm still able to play it though! But I'm hopin to get those km mods and ctf going eventually. I used to use Eraser Bot back in the day for offline use. Thanks again all, I'll check back in this weekend. Take care

GLimp_Init() - no hardware acceleration detected. Please install drivers provided by your video card/GPU vendor. My guess was correct. You don't have your GPU drivers installed. You'll need to research what GPU you have, and go to the vendor's website and download the correct driver and install it.
BTW, the original Quake2 binaries work for you because they default to the software renderer. But they don't support widescreen at all, so they won't be fullscreen on your laptop.
You shouldn't have unzipped that file that Grieve posted- it contains an older version of ref_gl.dll that overwrites the one from my 3.24 patch. You should reinstall the 3.24 patch or just re-extract its ref_gl.dll. That ref_r1gl.dll also isn't worth using with the 3.24 patch- it's from R1Q2, which hasn't been updated since 2011.
Also, you should try using the nightly KMQ2 builds from the link I posted. There's lots of improvements to be had.

well, not exactly - the ref_gl.dll I posted should be the one from the 3.24 patch, which is my default Q2 exe. the r1_gl renderer still works fine.

since we're at it, most gl-renderers give me a nasty malfunction, where the dynlight on the walls which is caused by weapons isn't drawn smooth and correctly, but is split in something like flickering bars. what's with that exactly ?

The ref_gl.dll in that zip (October 2013) is older than the one in the latest release of 3.24 (June 2015). Besides, KMQuake2 can't use either of those DLLs.
Those jagged edges on dlights are the light cutoff, which I made adjustable via the r_lightcutoff cvar. It was previously hardcoded at 64. As for flickering bars, I've never seen that. Screenshot?

it affects weapon lights as well as polyblend.
happens still in Q2e, but it is, like, hexed - when I take a screenshot this looks completely normal.
so I can't prove it ....

If it doesn't occur in screenshots, then the image rendered to the frame buffer is correct.
Sounds like you just need to turn on v-sync to get rid of tearing. Enter this in the console:
gl_swapinterval 1

alas, didn't work. but q2e seems to be the last port which gives me this error, so it's no biggie. sure, has some nice effects, but I don't depend on it ...

I knew migrating from win 7 pro to win 10 would result in some sort of subterfuge! I've gone through Dell and Intel's sites, no joy on drivers thus far. I'll try swapping out the ref_gl.dll's while continuing to look for the gpu drivers. It's an old Mobil Intel 4 series wddm 1 or similar. Yeah, old school. I have an AMD/nvidia rig here at home, but I'm determined to get another few months out of this thing. Anyhow, thanks again guys! I'll be working my way into the mods here eventually, super stoked to see there's still a resource-rich community for this game. I'll chip away at it and keep ya posted....

Intel is really bad with their graphics drivers, particularly for supporting older hardware on newer OSes. This isn't the first time I've heard of somebody being left up shit creek without a paddle with their GPUs. At first I thought you might have a mobile GeForce or Radeon, which even if not officially supported, might have hacked drivers for Win10 available somewhere. I'd switch straight to your gaming rig for trying to run KMQuake2. It's not worth the frustration to keep futzing with Intel's inferior graphics from that era.
