CBS Says It Was Wrong For Airing Story On Bush Records Network Says It Was Deliberately Misled
POSTED: 12:31 pm EDT September 20, 2004 UPDATED: 1:19 pm EDT September 20, 2004
NEW YORK -- It's an embarrassing admission for CBS on a big story.
The network admits it can't be sure that documents that were used to question President George W. Bush's Vietnam-era National Guard service are the real thing. Timeline: Guard Records
CBS said it was wrong to air a story on "60 Minutes Two" that it couldn't substantiate.
Several experts had said the documents purportedly written by one of Bush's squadron commanders were fakes. But CBS strongly defended the documents -- and didn't admit the papers might be questionable until the commander's former secretary said she believed they were fakes.
CBS said a retired Texas National Guard official has acknowledged providing the documents -- and that he admitted to Dan Rather this weekend that he deliberately misled a network producer about the papers' origin, to protect a source.
Dan Rather said he wishes he knew then what he knows now. The CBS anchor has offered an apology, after the network admitted it can't vouch for the documents.
Rather said he's sorry CBS "made a mistake in judgment". He says if he'd known then what he now knows, he wouldn't have gone ahead with the story as it aired on "60 Minutes Two."
Rather was in the lead as the network vigorously defended the documents against claims they were fakes.
CBS issued the following statement for its viewers:
CBS News is determined to answer the questions that have emerged about documents in a report originally broadcast on 60 MINUTES Wednesday.

This is really a sad day in America. This is typical for the USA Mainstream Media. These guys need to wake up, their time is coming to an end.
