Hi everyone. First i would like to introduce myself. I am know as Rab,d. I am a mapper/dev/player of the Quake2 mod DDAy. I am glad to have stumbled across this site. I hope i can offer help with mapping questions. I hope to learn stuff aswell.
So...as the subject reads... I have become a skilled skybox creator and i am offering my skills to anyone. If anyone is into making an environmental map...and ya want a sweet custom skybox...just say the word. Give me a description of what you are looking for(like weather, mountains, ocean, where you would like the sun to be, clouds, etc.) If you are using sun_light and the associated value sun_angle..plz include the values of your sun_angle. That will help me place the sun in the correct spot. thx.

The ones i have are very native earth looking But i can easily produce more, that would suit the Quake2 world. I use Terragen to produce the images. And i edit them further if needed.

Hey rabid, I've been trying out some of the Counterstrike Environment sets and I've noticed that they have a compatible sized .tga but many don't include a dumbed-down .pcx for people who are only running Quake in software mode...
Unfortunately, I've never really screwed with making env's and textures... What would you use to convert the .tga to .pcx? do I need Paint Shop? or will my Photoshop 6.0 suffice?
I assume that the .pcx files for quake2 environments are 8bit textures but I don't know for sure... can you shed any light on this?

This is a great freeware program. www.tucows.com/preview/194967It snaps up quickly in windows. so it makes for a nice viewer. It's very easy to resize/resample pics and has a handful of filters, also. For the counterstrike .tga's you need to decrease the color dpeth to 8bpp. And save as .pcx. That should do it. Sometimes it helps if you use Wally to load the quake2 color pallete for the pics. This makes them have a tendancy to jive better with the textures in your map.

they must be converted to the Quake 2 palette if you want to use them in Quake 2, or else they will look wrong. palette conversions can generally be done with every graphics program. Wally also works fine. I use Irfanview too as the default program to open jpgs, btw. dervish, indexed picture formats like gif or pcx always use a 8 bit color palette, that is, 256 colors. therefore, your assumption was not so wrong .....

hmm you guys are right on the dot about the palette change... the ones I just converted work, but look "iffy" in software mode... can anyone provide a brief walkthru of this step in wally? (since I'm a Q2 palette changin virgin... and everyone else probably has wally too)
