I decided to give Valve's Hammer Editor (Version 3.4) a try to create a map for a Q2 engine-based game I won't mention here. The editor doesn't seem that bad, but there is a very important question left: How do I select a brush in the camera window?! You won't believe it but I even read the manual that comes with Hammer (it's pretty good apart from this question not being answered!). On the keyboard shordcut list, it says this ( Help -> Reference -> Hotkey Reference): 3DView - ...
- Shift+Right-mouse-click - will select an entire brush and bring up the 3D View context menu
- ...
Doesn't work for me though. I tried holding SHIFT, CTRL, ALT and various combinations of them, then LMB or RMB but didn't find it. Can't be that hard, can it?! I'm on Windows XP in case that matters.

lol, my map is 50% finished and I still don't know how to do this. Can't be impossible -- or... can it?!

Hammer 3.4 is for Half-Life 1. There's a 'Select Brush' tool on the sidebar in Hammer to select brushes. in the 2d views you need to click on the + or x in the centre of each brush in order to select it from memory.
Let me know how it goes.

Yeah, I know that. I'm using it to make a map for CS (don't ask).
And I know the select tool (and the handles), but it doesn't work in the 3D window.
It often happens that multiple brushes have their handles in the same position in, which makes selceting brushes in the 2D-windows extremely annoying. You can cycle through the brushes that have their handle in the same position as the one you just selected (by pressing PAGE_UP and PAGE_DOWN) which makes using Hammer 3.4 possible, but it doesn't really make it fun.

I just installed it to see if I had the same problem you did, and I could select the brush in 3d using the selection tool and I didn't need any key combinations to do it, just line the camera up to the brush you want to select in the 3d view, and just click on it man. Another thing to check is in the "2D" settings tab, is whether or not you have the "Selection box selects by handles only" option checked. If you do, well, it could be the whole reason for this cafuffle. Again, let me know how it goes. It feels so wierd to edit with Hammer again since I first started making q2 maps with it ages ago. I will admit it has better brush manipulation than Radaint, but meh, I am not a BIG fan of it anymore.

I don't get it, it just won't work for me.
Just updated to Hammer 3.5 and nothing changed. I'm back to Radiant.

I'm using WorldCraft 1.6 and I also had this problem. I fixed it by disabling hardware acceleration in the Tools > Options > 3D Views tab.
After this the 3D view is real choppy when moving around but at least I can select brushes in it.

Thanks for the reply.
It's been a while, lost the map in the meantime and don't have Hammer installed anymore, but I may try that one day.
