NOES!!!!!
Use BSP...
UMMM NAH!
Use Hammer...
OOPS! HOLD ON!
Use a hexadecimal text editor...
UHUH WAIT!
Use Tread...
Seriously though, I suggest you grab as many different tools as possible, find out which one 'feels' best and then let the gang here know which you choose. I think you'll find more help then you'll ever need with this bunch of miscreants. And I do believe that pretty much all the above mentioned editors has a 'posse' 'round these here parts...aside from the text editing, no one but those Neal and Bob loonies are crazy enough to do that sort of thing.
Now opinion time...
Quark is the most robust tool out there bar-none. Radiant would be next in line and both are very stable. I still (haha still...lol) use Tread, it simply feels right even with all its warts and flaws.
The best of luck to you, I'll help as much as I can if the other lads don't beat me to it. X7 is quick on the draw and has a vast wealth if excellent information.

colormap.pcx? try going to the directory you installed the editor in. From my knowledge all the editors come with a copy of this file. Copy this file into the baseq2/pics directory under the quake 2 dir and you won't get this error again.

Maybe he forgot to set the proper paths to Q2 and the Compiling Tools in the "Configuration" menu.

Maybe he forgot to set the proper paths to Q2 and the Compiling Tools in the "Configuration" menu. one can not answer the Q if it is not asked. I DL'ed an enhanced v of Quake2. All the maps are red and it will not work in single player mod. Quake works with r1q2. and will not play the Vanilla server. 3.20 and r1q2 installed on this machine. With these issues, making maps is a no go. suggestions ?
