I need a big rock for my map and am having trouble with it's shape. Often when moving a vertice the triangle will deform and misalign with neibouring ones. I tried using GenSurf but it cuts the map up too much and it's difficult to tweak.
Any tips for making boulders or rocks in any editor? I use QuArK but am willing to try others to get this.

With vertice manipulation you can only go up or down, otherwise shape gets distorted. Make the general shape you want out of one brush then make several small triangles inside the shape to fill it out. Then use vertice manipulation to get the shape you want. hope that helps. Hell, hope you can understand!

What Jester said. I'll usually create triangle soup out of the area I'm looking to turn into terrain. And from there you just start pushing/pulling verts up/down. I find it's easiest to work on X/Y in the top view and then, if you're making a wall or a vertical face, rotate the group on either X or Y to get it into place.

...or you can use Raqs al Q2! The random rock generator. Wrote this a very long time ago (almost "My First Windows Program"). Recompiled and updated recently for some maps I'm making. I would suggest generating about 5 or 10 rocks - this program outputs simple MAP files - then have a look at them, and pick the best ones. I use Qoole, so I can save the output of Raqs al Q2 as prefabs. (Note about the name: "raq" means "dance" in Arabic... "al" means "the" or "of") The attached ZIP has the program exe - no other program components are needed.. Raq on! Attachments:
