First of all, yes I'm still alive and kicking And I still love Quake 2! I miss mapping for it. Life has just been wooshing by so quick - its almost June already!!! Gaming and Mapping have been put on the back burner for now, but I still dabble in map sketching from time to time. I get my inspiration from looking at old sketches I did a while ago that I still need to get around to making, lol. It's good to see this place still going strongly, and supporting a classic game JUst thought I'd actually post something and see how you're all doing, coz I care and everything Keep Rockin peeps. - TMG

I only play some SP Q2 from time to time but I regularly come here to see what people are doing. And I played through that remake of Q2 that was releases for Quake 4 a while ago. I also got some map sketches in my writing pads and I recently fired up Radiant and turned one of them into a layout. Will take me some time to make it look good though I guess.

I'm big into Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts right now and I have a new job that pays decent for counter work. My breaks practically last all day . I've settled in back home again and my computer desk, which is 1 foot away from the side of my bed, has 2 systems with a pile of games on it and a 4-foot stack of open Lego boxes next to it. I haven't had any interest in Quake this year because I think it's too time consuming to draw a map 1 rectangle at a time. Farcry 2 has drag-and-drop and while that makes for some easy mapping, it also makes for some retarded kiddie throw-togethers too.. Maybe posting here will bring some inspiration. - Mike

Yeah, I've also had a look at the FarCry2 editor a while ago.
Mapping for it really has to do little with art or design if you just use the premade stuff. The only task (which isn't easy though) is to make a map that plays well. People who don't get that and just publish a random landscape that looks good (because the game can't look bad) made me stop trying after I downloaded a few custom maps, all of which were shit.
The game was pretty new then though and all people did was to publish maps as fast as possible I guess.

I've noticed a few companies that are making games with wide open areas are adopting the farcry/farcry2 method of making maps these days.
even Red Faction is confusing to edit for. I tried it once and it had me from the get go.
I prefer the id software way - carving and shaping a map from scratch with ever asset to make a truely unique map and its so much richer that way compared to all the custom prefab slew that game companies put out today.

It depends on what you wanna do imo. I wouldn't try to rebuild one of those FarCry maps in GtkRadiant for $10,000. But I prefer the quake style of level building too, ofc.

Yeah I couldnt imagine how bad the r-speeds would be if anyone tried making a FC2 map in Q2 I've basically been trying to re-invent my map sketches at the moment. Taking the old sketches (which when they were done, were very horizontal in their layout) and trying to make them more vertical and integral with each other. Its a slow process because I dont have a lot of time personally anymore and also I have aquired more skill since I first created the initial sketches, so I am trying my best to make them looks better from a geometry standpoint, without including unecessary things - imo every area should have a purpose to it, or at least be a believable in-between area to another.
