So what's up with the void here. that's supposed to be a hallway...not an orange void. Only does it when I'm standing in that doorway there.

This can be couple things..
1)The wall is one side sky face?, check texture flags.
or? 2) You got a sky texture behind that wall,in player front view.
or? 3)sometime,s , with copy & past with a rotation..in quark grid will jump 0.1 your cube is not straight on the other cube...check it!.

The area has never been rotated. There are no sky brushes in the map. Just happens in that little circular door way there. Picture is the area in question. When I leave the doorway all is well. I remade the area in Quark and I still see this problem. Depicted here is me outside the doorway.

How much of that is detail brushes? Try reducing the complexity of the non-detail brushes in that area to change how VIS processes it.
Also try setting gl_lockpvs to 1 so you can move around and see exactly what VIS did right there.
