I seen a site but can't find it. It contained an area about the .Pak files in Quake 2 pak0.pak etc etc down to pak1.pak .. It had stated what certain numbers were for what and so on. I tried googling it but am not sure how to word the search.

I don't know the site you're talking about, but there's not much to Quake2's baseq2 pak files. - Pak0.pak is everything from the December 1997 release, except the cinematics and player models.
- Pak1.pak was added in January or February 1998 for the 3.12 point release that added the deathmatch maps.
- Pak2.pak contains skins for the third-person blaster and grappling hook models (palette-less, so when you open them up, they'll appear grayscale until you import Q2's palette).
- Pak3.pak is the match1 1-on-1 DM map, a separate download.
- There are also the 64-player DM maps, but they were never packaged in a pak file.
Personally, I just merged all the pak2 and later stuff into pak1.pak. I also have the CTF paks in baseq2, as pak 6 and pak7.
