I thought it would be fitting to re-visit a map from tIKi_mAns Q2 Mapping Contest of 2003. This map is from Miniwood who is also a mapper for my 2004 Mapping Contest. This was personally one of my favorite maps from the contest and I always thought it should have placed higher. It has some really unique features and I just wanted to give it a little love again! It's called Cold Steel and you can download it right here: www.miniwood.com/maps/mwq2dm4.zip

8-)This map is constructed very competent, the brushwork is superb and flawless, the lighting is good. Great details like this reactor thingy construction or the BFG flashes in the teleporter.
The arguments against it were some flaws in gameplay and the inconsistency in style.
Especially the latter prevents this map from being a masterpiece or even a really good map.
Because of that I had already forgotten it.

This map was in my top 5 together with Grunt, Lunar waste facility, maric83tkc and Snxdm2a...allways ment the final score in that contest, apparently dident match the same, in popularity by the players on my server.

A copy paste, form the 13 maps revisited..,
Cold Steel (by Miniwood) Pros: With this map Miniwood shows what he's capable of. Clean brush work, proper texture alignment and a fair amount of details. Funny jumppads, a nice tower, more curves than Ms. Anderson, and a gorgeous teleporter (note how it closes when someone enters it;)). Lets just say the amount of time and effort put into this map has surely payed off. The theme is carried out pretty well with those curves everywhere and the use of white sunlight sure helped creating the cold yet moody atmosphere. He's also made the beautiful skybox which of course is a nice feat in itself. Connectivity is average but definitely not bad. Nice for 2-4 players, but any more than that and you'll be running out of ammo most of the time because of the way it is placed.
Cons: It's probably to say for every map ever made, but the item placement does have some flaws. The loadout in itself is fine but especially the ammo placement is illogical. There's nothing wrong with scattering the ammo to make players move around as long as there's at least some ammo in sight of the weapon that needs it. The adrenalin in its location is more or less pointless as it requires a rocket or grenade jump to get to it. So without a certain weapon and sufficient health you can't use it. There's a similar problem with the 2 large health packets near the RL; it's probably better to place health in a more accessible location or out of sight here. When standing in the outer area there's a whole 'rooftop' of polys being drawn since the skybox streches out over the top part of the map. Perhaps this was done for the sake of realism or perspective but those parts are almost not visible at all thus unnecessarily adding to the polycount.
*Note to author: Despite of being a nice skybox, this one also crashes Quake2 if you have turned on 8bit textures. It seems the pcx files weren't converted to a 256 color palette but just saved as pcx with the Exact colors. This also means the pcx files now have twice the filesize.(download fixed Sky-box here)
This is just our vision of the map,
Cheers, $ilver@cer

Ha, I just noticed this thread. I pretty much agree with Neko-Chan, as well as Silveracer and Pan's review. Good brushwork and texturing, fair connectivity, very poor item placement resulting in poor or stilted gameplay. If you think my contest map this year is going to be as bad as this one, well, think again. I learn from my mistakes.

We only expect better from you Miniwood.
You have great potential, and you are a threat to those who expect to win this contest. And we are very glad to have you in the contest aswell, because you´ll be making a new map we ALL want to see. Just hope we all can finish on time.
Cheers Dude,
Silveracer

Just so you know Miniwood.... "Neko-Chan" is really Grieve from PSC and Backshooters. He felt the need to change his name on my forum.

"Neko-Chan" is really Grieve from PSC and Backshooters. I kinda had that figured already, I notice that someone called 'Felicia' makes similar style posts at Backshooters too. But I'm staying well away from that whole 'feud' thing, the people here and at Backshooters are my friends and I consider Neko-Chan's brief summary of Cold Steel entirely accurate.
