Hi everyone, my server is up and running and the only one with a high ping (apart from some guys from the US, which is some thousand miles away) on it seems to be me. I didn't do any tweaking to my config's net settings yet and thought this may help at least a bit. I'd therefore like to know whether you can supply with a few tips on q2 net settings. Llinks to documents welcome (but with q2 sites I am often unsure how old they were and whether the info given still applies). I'm on DSL16k here (16 MBit down, 1 MBit up). Rate ist set to "25000". My complete config can be seen here if you want to have a look. What settings and connection do you use? EDIT: Don't know whether that matters but I'm using the r1q2 client.

Hmmmm...I know a few of the guys here should know a thing about running servers, maybe X7 or Wixen1 can help you. I think they deal with this a lot.

Ummm, the question was not about running servers. My inet connection just sucked, the others said the server was doing very well for them. I was talking about q2 client settings.
Likt this stuff in quake III arena:
seta rate "25000" seta snaps "40" seta cl_maxpackets "120" seta cl_timenudge "0"
But it's ok now anyways without me doing sth, maybe some of the guys here were ruining my ping by downloading ... um... stuff, you know?

If you are hosting a dedicated server and you try to connect through a client and you get a high ping (locally), then it's probably because you have your settings for programs set to give the most memory to the programs in the background. Quake2's dedicated servers eat up memory, and I would only assume R1Q2's take a bit less (or more since it's a Windows app and not a console app..). You've got three options; set your option so it gives more RAM to your on-top applications, use a Listen server instead of Dedicated (where you host from inside the client itself rather than dedicated) or get more RAM!

a rate setting of "15000" in your client config should be plenty high. you may get choppy gameplay with it set higher when there is a load on the server. other things that wont fix your ping, but will change how smooth and how well you can move, include your v-sync setting and your a-sync setting. v-sync can be on or off depending on the value of the gl_swapinterval setting. Can't explain exactly what it does off the top of my head but a side effect of it allows me to set my cl_maxfps setting pretty high and actually see FPS over 60 in-game. I play with it "on", so this is in my config: set gl_swapinterval "1" a-sync is a feature of r1q2 that allows packets to be sent that dont exactly correspond in timing with the actions that are being rendered.. (it allows the FPS and your packet sending rate to not affect one another..) I turn off the asynchronous FPS handling that R1Q2 uses in favor of the original style that Q2 uses in order to emulate the exact physics of regular q2 3.20.. otherwise, you jump lower/shorter and your movements can be "sticky" at times.. this is the setting to disable a-sync (in order to make r1q2 behave just like 3.20): set cl_async "0" there's loads more stuff though that can probably affect your gameplay... check out my complete config and see if you can find anything in there that helps: (it's mostly commented for readability) dervish.tastyspleen.net/files/wd.cfg(you might find a few nifty aliases and such too)

Thanks Paril and Whirlingdervish! I'll check out that config. Today my ping was very good though (15 - 25, when I was complaining about it it was 180 - 220 ) btw Paril: I'm not running those servers on the box I'm playing on. They run on my linux root server that's located in a data center some 150 miles away.

I use this for R1Q2 Q2 Config-O-Matic Select a config template R1Q2 client R1Q2 server R1GL r-1.ch/q2config.phpThis might be wrong, the "seta" is use with Quake3 not Quake2. seta rate "25000" seta snaps "40" seta cl_maxpackets "120" seta cl_timenudge "0" X7

It turned out that others in here were indeed downloading stuff via those crappy filesharing clients. I tested it and it turned out that after someeone starts downloading sth. (i.e. a linux CD image via bittorrent) my ping goes from 20 to 200 in < 10 secs. Thanks for your help anyways! @whirlingdervish: Your config looks good, got some interesting stuff in there! X7[Q2C]: Lol, I actually used that config generator for my server but didn't remember that one could also generate client configs with it! I'll copy some of the stuff from there, but I prefer to have a manually written and commented config. And the 'seta' stuff is from q3, yes. It was intended to illustrate what I was looking for only.
