I compiled this list a while back and forgot to put it here.
Paril's Picks
10: Bang!
Bang is a mod created by r1ch where the whole mod is based around grenades. The action never ends.
I liked Bang because handgrenades were always my favorite weapon. Turning that into 8+ handgrenades made the game crazy. I loved a few of them so much I moved two into IWM as 'extra' grenades, because they were my favorite. Bang definitely deserves a little area on my list here. R1ch, these grenades have been a constant inspiration in IWM and other mods.
9: Brazen
Brazen is a mod created by Mr Grim. Now, I know I have worked on this, and it's kinda a no-no to list mods that you made, but I'm refering to Brazen 2 base release, before I even touched the source. The whole idea of Brazen is basically cooperative/single player play in a Quake2-style universe (for once, eh?). It uses base q2 maps for it's basic pack. Alternate missions can be made with existing maps by ent/ant files. Ripping weapons off of monsters, realistic inventory, all while keeping basic Quake2 items.
Brazen is a definite time passer. It's not a mod that can be played every single day. It's repetitive value deteriorates with each play. While it may not be perfect, it's definitely a try in my book.
8: CTF
Who can't remember the times of CTF servers being packed to the top? 23/24 player servers you'd find on Gamespy, joining it and then seeing the carnage. You can't resist, so you join in. Map of choice: q2ctf4a. Definitely good times, and an experience that can only be fulfilled by playing Quake1 CTF
I don't even think I NEED to write a description of why this got on my list.
7: Vortex
Vortex is possibly the most advanced RPG mod to date for Quake2. Although KOTS has a slightly bigger base, KOTS has no developers, while Vortex moves a few seconds a day.
The reason this makes it here is because it's a really great way to pass time on a LAN server. With the classes, monsters, PVP, it's definitely an all-around great mod to play on.
6: Navy Fortress
Possibly the mod that started the whole Quake2+Realism thing, NF is what is and always shall be.
Unlike Action Quake, there are over 18 weapons in NF, including pistols, shotguns, machineguns, submachineguns, assault rifles, grenade launchers and an RPG. It's a fun mod to play on, even though it has numerous bugs.
5: Lazarus
Same deal with Brazen and the me-taking-over thing.
Lazarus is probably the most revolutionary mod to come to Quake2. With all of it's new entities and features for map editors, it's a great base for map packs and mission packs. I don't think much of this is needed, as Lazarus is probably the only mod that cannot be played without user-created maps, but it's still incredible to see.
4: WoD
WoD was my favorite mod back in the day. Times have changed, things have moved on, but WoD 8 was always THE mod to play. I used to always hang out in a server called "Ciph's School of Hard Knocks", and the Pheonix WoD 1v1.
There was no doubt when I was conducting the list that this was going to be one of the top 5. I played this hours on ends with some old buds, including my personal trainer in Quake2 "Tunnel Rat" (whom I did get in touch with because he ended up having to leave the Q2 scene because of work). Most of my favoritible moments are left there in the past.
3: QPong
QPong is more of something that I just started playing, and it's something I can't stop playing now. Great mod, and even the Quake3 version hasn't left it's values.
The thrill of this mod hasn't left and I don't think it ever will. Kicking oversized spheres into opponents will never get better, and this mod turned it into something that almost had to be done.
2: Action Quake
Action Quake. Possibly the best realism mod after NF. What confuses me about NF and AQ is that the hands are the exact same model and animate the same, yet the creator of NF assured me they were two different mods in production. Huh.
Anyway, this mod inspired other mods like Dirty, and it's definitely a classic. If you love realism, this is the mod to go to. I can't contain myself from playing this with a few buds on my servers, and I don't think anyone else should
1: Qwar2
Here we are, number one. The mod that combines Quake2 and RTS, and was also my inspiration for RTQ.
The reason it made number one is because I found this mod to be the perfect combination of gameplay, replay value, overall and controls. It was just in perfect balance over all of the other mods listed above. It never fails to be a great mod, although maps made especially for it are very sparce. If there was a mod out there perfect for 1v1 LAN games, this would be it.
I'll get downloads up for each mod if you guys want.
