I was hoping maybe you guys might consider a CTF Mapping contest it would be the best Christmas Present ever for the Quake 2 CTF Communities!
Along with the rating system you have each CTF Community could rate the maps as different maps work better in different style CTF
There is a lot of activity in the Quake 2 CTF Communities.
Railwarz CTF being played almost every night 10-20 people on average connected during peak hours.
LFire CTF has a few nights a week with decent turn out of players. Sunday being most popular.
LMCTF can be pretty busy on a Tuesday and sometimes Thursdays
Expert CTF has a strong potential for some type of revival in the near future I am sure
Since I mainly play Railwarz CTF and there is a ton of activity in the community with about 100 - 200 ish players that stop by time to time throughout the year.
Most i've seen on the server in throughout one night was about 40-50 players Dec 23rd 2015
here is a sreen shot from the night we had 14v14 going for a couple hours or so.
Now I want to talk about some CTF maps and what makes them great for Railwarz CTF style play.
Population is not what it used to be. So in any CTF community smaller maps get played more often and enjoyed more than larger maps today.
Maps with no doors are preferred as they take away from the seamless flow of speed the lazer hook brings to this fast paced mod.
No weapon or item placement is required to make a railwarz CTF map if you arent feeling up for that task but the other CTF communities might appreciate it
tight spaces, bottle necks, also take away from the flow of the game. but too large of hallways, bases, courtyards, etc can have their downfall too.
Railwarz CTF Maps by Popularity.
Bleteys Blues is the number 1 map for Railwarz CTF nostalgia its kind of a large map but the dimensions of everything are pretty perfect.
the bases. the main hallway. the secondary room. The tunnels are wide. the center courtyard. and the elevator room that leads secondary tunnel entrance to base.
The two door ways that lead into base flag area are so easy to camp i think this is what makes it so enjoyable for those who like to camp defense on this map. A great challenge for the offensive side as well
rtctf1w modded by weasle to remove door is the version we play most.
xlctf2b is arguably the 2nd most popular map in recent years. it has some doors we wish could be removed if someone could ever mod it for us it would be perfect!
Cacophony . Publius . Myrkul is the most popular map in L-Fire CTF and is a great map for railwarz CTF too. im sure the same can be said for LMCTF and Expert CTF for this map.
as2m7 is not a symmetrical map like most CTF maps so there is some controversy over which base is the better base to defend. as the blue base the flag is very easy to camp in the corner.
over it seems like a small map fully enclosed with short ceilings which make using the hook or grapple very easy on this map.
lfctf9 - slippery when wet. just as popular as the above maps in railwarz CTF
lfctf1 neuro
lfctf4 send in the clones
lfctf5 samurai
lfctf6 mines of hell
lfctf8 daknye
lfctf10 lush
marics_ctf21 variation on the blues
ul_ctf2 instant blues
lmctf39 - LMCTF blues
these maps are all very popular as well and get a lot of play in railwarz CTF.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
smap05 or b6ctf Outpost Omega by Beer has become a recent favorite of both the railwarz and lfire communities. Im sure it would do well with LMCTF and Expert CTF as well.
the same can be said for
marics_ctf18 the pit
nxctf4 heartless - we play this version on railwarz i like that the stairs inside the base are not hugged against the wall like they are in rampless version
nxctf4b rampless - this is played more on L-Fire. both are almost the same map just small differences to the two.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I got a collection of maps from the guy who made slimyctf a modded version of q2ctf3 the smeleter. he used to run some of these maps on his expert CTF server or one he used to play on.
I do love the slimyctf map a bit more than ether version of smelter as i feel it is better suited for using the hook wider doorways etc.
but these "newer" maps that i have recently discovered and have been playing in Railwarz CTF I like and think work very well because they are small/simple maps that you can learn very quickly.
gymctf2
This map is a perfect railwarz CTF map. Ive never seen it played in any other version of CTF yet.
blckbase
this map is so fun to me! its small.. kinda of spacious yet claustrophobic with all these support beams everywhere that make it a challenge to hook around and give u lots of hiding room to dodge railz
octoball
this map is another perfect one for railwarz like gymctf2
octo2beta
i havent had the chance to play this one as much as i would like yet. the base design is very interesting.. and the courtyard is pretty sweet too
gra1
this is such a fun small map. 1v1 2v2 3v3 4v4 lol theres not much to the map just a dividing wall in the center and some ramps.
andaction
this map looks like a dojo where neo learned how to be the chosen one in matrix its also very simple just a wooden beam in the center and another crossing the top.
had a ton of fun on this little map with small crowds of people.
baricade.
another small yet entertaining map
mactf05
this map is very small space map with jumping pads and teleportation pads lot of fun too but the brightness or lights are a bit too bright. even if i set gl_modulate .1 the map is so bright!
fortsup
this is just a large box room with a bridge in the center. some water under the bridge splitting the middle of the map. some uneven terrain and rock/ramps to bounce off of. def one of my fave of these new maps im listing.
codctf6
this map is awesome! super mario CTF what a trip. i have been speaking to the maker of this map and want to get the sounds from him so it plays the coin noise when u hit the blocks or go down the green tunnels. 1up music etc
my only complaint about this map is the green tunnies could use a little shading
lmctf34
this map is a modded version of mactf01 old forts played it just a few times in railwarz CTf recently and it played very well for the most part. if the secondary entrance to the base could be shortened n wider or simplified it would be perfect.
-------------------------------------------
lmctf37
gunslinger CTF such a great map. havent had too many chances to play it as its kind of a large map. and new large maps are tough to get played sometimes.
lmctf42
airline CTF maybe a little larger than gunslinger and even harder to get people to play it.
i wish both of these maps could be shrunk just a tiny bit or i wish we could get enough players to play them and enjoy cause they are fantastic maps!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ill edit this and provide screen shots and links to maps eventually for those who want to check them out.
the first 16 or so maps i listed get the most play in railwarz community for some reason or another.
the next 11 maps are very new to railwarz and are catching on quickly
the very last 2 are examples of fantastic maps! but just a little too large to get a lot of play time.
Railwarz/LFire mappers
UnderLord made us ul_ctf2 instant blues once upon a time ago.
neoxotb made nxctf1-7 some of them should probably be played more and hopefully will in time
kid made 3 new maps for railwarz this year
f2w a very large dome type map with catwalks connecting the bases. and ramp pads on the floor his very first map to make. if it was a bit smaller it may get played more
theshack this map has been pretty popular and im a big fan of
trapped this one does very well also.
I havent gotten to know the LMCTF map makers who put out some of these amazing maps in recent years but have become more involved in the LMCTF community so maybe that will change soon
I hope this is informative and sparks some interest in the mapping community.
I will be back to make edits and hope that you guys may consider a CTF map making contest.
