They most likely won't, but only the engine was released under the GPL, not the maps/textures/models.
So depending on the mood of some lawyers, it may be a very bad idea to risk breaking the copyright. Apart from that, ID is one of the companies that really made lots of stuff public and available under very fair conditions imo and one should respect that the textures were not part of this.

So rebuilding or editing the deathmatch maps (such as the different copies of The Edge) is illegal?

by the letter of the law, I'd assume yes. they are silly huh? Seems like a lot of work to stifle creativity and stop people from freely advertising your game in some form..

They didn't come forward to email ME about it, I'm the one that stopped it on my free will. I guess eventually I started to feel bad about what I did. Atleast I did it earlier than waiting for them to email me and kick my ass.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the copyright issues weren't from ID, but from Wirehead Studios. I used Tabun's Quake2 class models basically. Converted them from md3 to md2.
