Treasure hunter finds Spanish coins washed up by hurricane (10.18.04) — INDIALANTIC, Fla. (AP) -- Joel Ruth doesn't want to tell anyone where "X" marked the spot in Brevard County. That's because the treasure hunter recently found some antique Spanish silver coins washed onto an Indialantic beach by Hurricane Jeanne last month. His 180 Spanish pieces of eight are in near-mint condition and are worth more than 40-thousand dollars. Ruth says you have to be quick after a hurricane in order to find treasure. That's because the high tides right after a storm often dump several feet of sand back on the same beaches. That leaves the heavy treasure well below the reach of most metal detectors.
