Does anyone knows a way to make a spiral staircase like a corkscrew winding (spindle)? Its easy if you make steps but iam looking for a way to make it with a smooth plain surface. Thx. in advance...

Maybe you could try using semi-circular brushes that are twisted at a slight angle, with a pillar in the exact center of the whole thing. make the semi-circles about 90 degrees round with the whole brush tilted towards one square end or angled slightly upward to match up with the next piece...
Think: slices of pie (slightly tilted at a 15 degree angle up from horizontal)
if you make one wedge shaped "pie slice" and start pasting and rotating from here, then the others will have the same angle as you rotate them around the pillar in a circular fashion
Try to make one full rotation of the pillar so you have a group of brushes that look like a whole circle from a top-down view... then cut and paste the screw "threads" up the pillar and move them so the upper end of one "circular brush group" touches the lower starting end of the next piece..
and viola!
let me know if this helps, I can probably make you a sample map in the morning...

Thx. WD. But i dont think that will work, have allready tryid that. Unless i misunderstands you. Maybe you schould show me if you can make it that way. The problem is that the slices has to be twisted or else you wont be able to make the pieces fit together. The inner side towards the center pillar will have to be much steeper than the outerside, and there is the problem. Se fig. W1

You understood me just fine wixen! I just tried it and you are quite correct. unfortunately that means that every pie slice will have to be made of at least 3 brushes instead of just 1. One for the actual "stair" and two little wedges that make the "twist" that you need for the ends to line up correctly. I dont think you could bend the one stair brush to get this effect because it would have 2 inward-curved planes on it (q2 won't let this happen).
The little wedges would really be the most important part because they will define how smooth your stairwell is... hmm. I'll get back to you on this one. I gotta try out a couple different things, first, before my foot ends up any deeper into my mouth...

Thats the way I often feel like when Iam rocketeered in LOX Mod.... ... I might talk to my friend "the Architect"... , he can maybe come up with something. Or maybe hes son, also Architect, but only 35 years of age, so he must have knowledge of Cad/Cam or such alike programs... Wixen1

might be easier if we could use real stone... instead of zillions of little brushes.

wow. nice site. I would recommend going to the panorama view page and exporting the huge full panorama view picture. Its perfect to make a custom environment...
just cut it into 4 evenly sized pics, then use the old eyedropper to get the sky color and make 1 pic thats all this color for a clear sky overhead... do the same with the street color for a floor pic and you'll have your 6 perfect env files If you ever build the tower into a map you'll have one awesome env to work with.. It will add a degree of realism that I haven't seen in many maps...
now, if we could figure out how to make the darn spiral staircase.. we'd be on to something!

Is this close to what you are looking for? I only had thirty or so minutes to spend on it. The grading is a little rough and might be "perfected" a little more with time and tweaking. If you need/want it, I'll work it out a little better. You are welcome to the final .map for reference or c-n-p. The total area of the full 360 spiral - 768 x 768 units (x-y) The rise over 1/2 (or a 180) of the spiral - 128 units (z-axis) The "halls" or "walkways" - 224 units +/- R_speeds from screen - 446

Oh and, I see no possible way to create the arched ceiling over the spiral rise without making 1000's of polies and it would likely take years off of my life even trying to do so... You're on your own with that one
