I have never been able to get the "gl_showtris 1" command to display the outlines of the polys in my maps. My video card is a geforce fx5200 256mb PCI, and it fully supports opengl 2.0.1 Is there any other command or config setting that affects this? Maybe something that's making the lines too thin to see?

We need more specs than a video card. Engine you're using?

what colour depth are you using on the desktop? If it's 32 bit and it doesn't work try setting the desktop depth to 16 bit and it should work. I had to do this to make it work on my old 9200SE, but I haven't tried it on my 6600GT yet.
Give that a go mate and tell us how it goes.

Neither of these will show the lines:
my home comp:
GPU: GeForce FX 5200 Core clock: 250MHz PixelPipelines: 4 Memory Clock: 400MHz(effective) Memory Size: 256MB Memory Interface: 128-bit Memory Type: DDR RAMDAC: 350 MHz Max Resolution 2048 x 1536 corrrection: it runs opengl 1.5..
my Quadro NVS 285 here at work runs opengl 2.0 and its PCI-E x16 with 128 mb of DDR and comparable stats to the fx5200 on core clock speeds
needless to say, these should both be total overkill for q2.
I use a recent build of R1Q2, and for the gl renderer I use R1GL. I've also tried it using q2 3.20. and I tried the 16bit color depth and it didn't help.

Try This - Pull down console - gl_ext_multitexture 0 - hit enter - vid_restart - hit enter - gl_showtris 1

umm, wtf, r1q2 + r1gl has same basic cmds as the vanilla q2. gl_ext_multitexture 0; vid_restart; gl_showtris 1

Yes, but the thing is it doesn't work on his video card itself. I'm thinking R1Q2/R1GL broke something somewhere. How unexpected. |8(

The only one that don't work that I have found is with R1GL using the gl_lightmapSo I just change the vid to the default gl and you have to be in single player game to use it. X7

hrm.. update:
tried it with r1gl, and r1q2 and gl_ext_multitexture 0, after seeing SOB[WOS]'s reply and it worked..
must have been the gl_ext_multitexture setting the whole time.. The order in which I tried them, seems to have given a false positive on r1q2 being the problem.

Quake2 actually renders GL_POLYGON's, not GL_TRIANGLES, and so I always found that hack to be ..hackey Quake2World provides r_showpolys, which looks better and is more accurate as well:
