Reminds me of a project I did together with a friend quite a few years ago (we were in the 9th grade or sth like that). We replaced all the sounds of DooM with self-made sounds wrapped up in a wad-file, but all of them were very ridiculous. It was never publically released but I was lmao when I found it on my HDD a few years later and gave it a try.
And I remember that it was great fun making the sounds in front of a 5$ mic plugged into the 386 PC. ;-)
The project was called 'Dumm', the german word for stupid, that is pronounced similar to Doom.

It turned out that others in here were indeed downloading stuff via those crappy filesharing clients. I tested it and it turned out that after someeone starts downloading sth. (i.e. a linux CD image via bittorrent) my ping goes from 20 to 200 in < 10 secs. Thanks for your help anyways! @whirlingdervish: Your config looks good, got some interesting stuff in there! X7[Q2C]: Lol, I actually used that config generator for my server but didn't remember that one could also generate client configs with it! I'll copy some of the stuff from there, but I prefer to have a manually written and commented config. And the 'seta' stuff is from q3, yes. It was intended to illustrate what I was looking for only.

Thanks Paril and Whirlingdervish! I'll check out that config. Today my ping was very good though (15 - 25, when I was complaining about it it was 180 - 220 ) btw Paril: I'm not running those servers on the box I'm playing on. They run on my linux root server that's located in a data center some 150 miles away.

Ummm, the question was not about running servers. My inet connection just sucked, the others said the server was doing very well for them. I was talking about q2 client settings.
Likt this stuff in quake III arena:
seta rate "25000" seta snaps "40" seta cl_maxpackets "120" seta cl_timenudge "0"
But it's ok now anyways without me doing sth, maybe some of the guys here were ruining my ping by downloading ... um... stuff, you know?

Hi everyone, my server is up and running and the only one with a high ping (apart from some guys from the US, which is some thousand miles away) on it seems to be me. I didn't do any tweaking to my config's net settings yet and thought this may help at least a bit. I'd therefore like to know whether you can supply with a few tips on q2 net settings. Llinks to documents welcome (but with q2 sites I am often unsure how old they were and whether the info given still applies). I'm on DSL16k here (16 MBit down, 1 MBit up). Rate ist set to "25000". My complete config can be seen here if you want to have a look. What settings and connection do you use? EDIT: Don't know whether that matters but I'm using the r1q2 client.

Thanks, that's quite a few maps. Is there any downside of having *many* maps on the server?
May piss off people who don't have most of them I guess...
I gave some more maps a try, really like the ones ztn made. Will try spogs later (hope my ping gets better till then).
EDIT: Fast downloads (gzipped files via apache) are now available btw.

Strange things just happened, noticed that too. It's most likely because it was 3 a.m. here at that time. I have setup cron to do lots of system maintenance tasks during the night at 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. so there's heavy load on the server at those times. Need some sleep now, will investigate further tomorrow. The games we played before that happened were fun anyways. Still lmao at that darksill map.

spirit, do you have a list of all the maps you're currently using on the server? it's a pain downloading them directly from the game server for the ones i don't have. Yeah, simply grab the all-in-one zipfile here: www.airrocket.net/quake2/It includes aerowalk, darskill, epitaph, jabs, jeggs, jpal, jsos, jstress, leray28, leray33, leray33a2, outpost, q2duel5, s2dm1, shadows, spirit2dm1b4, square, wddm06 and ztn2dm1 - ztn2dm5. The server also has q2dm1 - q2dm8 (not included in the mappack) of course. @ Whirlingdervish: I'll set that up tomorrow. Already read up on it at r1ch's forum and started it, it's not done yet though.

Hehe, that game was fun! We'll be playing some more this evening at 11 p.m. german time, that's GMT+2 atm because of summer time. (This is gonna be 1 hour after I posted this, see this website to see your timezone and the current GMT time. Add 2 hours to the GMT shown on that page to get the current german time.) Feel free to join the fighting!

Unless something unforeseeable happens, it'll be running all day (and night) long from now on. ;D Could be that I'll have to restart it (or the whole server, but this is very rare) when I'm trying new settings or something of course, but it should never be down for > 5 mins. As it is not started automatically at server boot-up atm it may be down if the server has to be rebooted and I forget to restart the q2 server afterwards. EDIT: the server is set to public and announces itself to some masters (q2master.planetquake.com master0.gamespy.com satan.idsoftware.com) now.

Thanks for all the info! There's a vanilla q2 server up and running at airrocket.net now (airrocket.net:27910 or 85.25.52.242:27910 if you need the IP for whatever reasons). Here's the list of maps it currently has: q2dm1-8, aerowalk, darsill, epitaph, outpost, q2duel5, shadows and ztn2dm1 - ztn2dm5, spirit2dm1b4 Expect more maps (including some of mappers from this community) soon. Ideas on maps still welcome. More info on the server and the maps are available at www.airrocket.net/quake2/I've written down a small howto for others who want to setup their own r1q2 server on linux btw. Comments and improvements welcome. I'll have a look at some mods later but the server has a lot of other things to do and lacks a bit of RAM atm so don't expect me to run 10 different q2 servers. The server is located in a data center in düsseldorf, germany. EDIT: hehe, just played my first online q2match ever. Was it someone from in here who joined the server? If someone gives it a try: it would be cool if you could drop a word on the performance of the server here. Thanks!

Got the r1q2 server up and running. Doing some testing atm and looking for must-have maps now. I've had a look at some q2 servers I found to figure out what maps are played. This is what I've come across so far (please don't kill me if it's all bs, I never played online q2 before): * epitaph.bsp * outpost.bsp * q2duel5.bsp * ztn2dm1.bsp * ztn2dm3.bsp * shadows.bsp Any suggestions? Would be cool if you could name your favourite 3 maps.

Thanks, I'll give r1q2 a try then.
Any must-have mods or are people playing vanilla quake2?

Hi everyone,
I consider setting up a q2 server over at airrocket.net and I'd like to know which q2 server implementations the server admins in here use because I've come across quite a few possibilites and am unsure on which to use.
My server is running debian GNU/linux so it would be especially nice to hear about q2 server implementations available for *NIX systems.
Though debian comes with a quake2-package I'd rather not use it because it warns you about not using it in internet environment due to unfixed security issues. I've seen r1q2 and the website claims that all the issues are fixed in r1q2.
Apart from the engine: are there any must-have mods I need to install (like lithium or sth.)?
Just to clarify: I'm not asking for instructions on how to install a q2 server, just for your opinions on which server is good/commonly used.
Thanks for your time.
