PeeWee - didn't see your comments till just now! Glad you thought jumping around Shardac was entertaining - I like a challenge beyond the normal flat paved surfaces, but it not popular to have weird angles in maps, probably due to the Engine's odd behavior on such surfaces.
Anyhow, look forward to dropping some corpses on this one (and the others) on your new server!

Man - that's one hell of an ordeal that you went through. Very happy to see you've made it through! Must be nice to hear in stereo! Now you can tell where those railgun shots are coming from!
Glad to see that the best mapper evar is alive and kickin!

I have never been able to get R1Q2 to even get close to the stock v3.20 engine. Everyone says it runs better and faster, etc., but on about 6 different computers I've tried it on, the stock engine at least doubles the frame-rate of the R1Q2 engine/dll. I've looked into this, and the general consensus is no one knows why.
It is my belief that it has in part to do with the sound system - R1Q2 hangs for about 3 seconds every time a new in-game sound occurrs (the first time someone fires a railgun, etc.). Seems that R1Q2 does not properly pre-load and buffer the sounds. Thereafter, most sounds will still lag the engine by about 50mS per occurrence. Suffice it so say, I've given up on R1Q2, but have deep respect for the guys that put it together. This most venerable game deserves an update...
Maybe it works best under Linux....
But of course, the stock engine's download system is excruciatingly slow.

Sweet! Just checked it out.... like the Jail Map... lots of typing "kill" in the console if you're in there alone though! Killer idea for a server... a link to a ZIP with all the maps/textures would be awesome! Hint hint

Ha, thanks! Indeed, I don't think it's worth my time to make a "normal" map! Always experimenting with new stuff, and dragging my Quake-head friends through the mess!
I know I'll never make a great simple DM map along the lines of Maric or those ZTN maps, so I live to press the envelope of what our beloved Q2 engine can, or is supposed to, do.
I love the mist/smoke effect in this map - I'm surprised it's not used more in Q2 maps...
Shardac was intended as a 1v1 (2player) DM map - simple and to the point. With only two people the lava at the bottom becomes a large strategic aspect of playing this one (shoot the lava cones on the bottoms of some of the platforms to raise/lower the lava in the water at the bottom). Hear someone grab the quad? Raise the lava for some good fun!

Thanks for the additional screen shots! You captured a a few very nice angles! So cool to see my logo in lights! By the way, this map took about 3 hours to make... and yes, I know it shows!

A screenie for y'all! It's a one-big-room-with-nowhere-to-hide kinda thing, so this pretty much shows it all!
All Yendor's maps need some kind of instruction manual, but this one's simple: Shoot the little lava cones on the bottom of some of the platforms to toggle the lava on and off... this is an important aspect of playing this map!

Well, it's been quiet on the mapping front lately, yet, my friends and myself have been splashing our guts all over this clusterf**k I made up a few weeks ago.
Get yer jump skillz polished, and get ready to be disoriented!
It's Shardac, baby! Smokey goodness!

I've searched all over the map and can't find this powerup: I think it's under the stairs, but couldn't find the right button!

Hey all~ Haven't been around in awhile...
Love the idea of an animated / puzzle mapping contest. I've done lots of experimentation in this area, and always have a great time...
My classic "Fours2d.bsp" (available on Tasty's Mutant server), is an example of what I do, and a very mild one at that! It derives from an original idea where the map is the weapon, and it's all about killing people with booby-traps set up in the map!
There are two main problems with this kind of thing though: 1. Most people like straight-up vanilla maps, and shower hate upon anything that moves in a map! 2. Moving items that are intended to be stood upon (trains, plats, etc.), get really screwy when subjected to the ravages of internet lag!
But dammit, it's great fun! I'm all for it!

...or you can use Raqs al Q2! The random rock generator. Wrote this a very long time ago (almost "My First Windows Program"). Recompiled and updated recently for some maps I'm making. I would suggest generating about 5 or 10 rocks - this program outputs simple MAP files - then have a look at them, and pick the best ones. I use Qoole, so I can save the output of Raqs al Q2 as prefabs. (Note about the name: "raq" means "dance" in Arabic... "al" means "the" or "of") The attached ZIP has the program exe - no other program components are needed.. Raq on! Attachments:

Oh hell - don't wait... I have two new maps already in progress, one of which is an all-out tour-de-force, where I'm spending time to put in all the little details. Gonna be awesome! It's an underground lab with a giant tentacled monster that broke out of its tank, and grew huge, trashing the place. The monster of course will be static, just large tentacles laying around the place, but the effect is great fun! It will also have pods that will provide weapons and powerups in the game.
The other one is a real quick and dirty job, utilizing the newest thing I found out how to do- create a weapon dispenser, yes! You push a button and a weapon pops out and is thrown in a random direction - the joy!

How about a contest about who can make the best map using Yendor's BEN I'd welcome that.... I may even fix some of the bugs and add some features that help with using it as an editor (a purpose for which it as never initially intended).... mrlemonyfresh - Yggdrasil is "The World Tree" from Norse mythology (Odin and all those guys).
